PUT A STOP TO TOOL THEFT FROM VANS

ith a rise in tool theft from vans, John Thompson, CEO at the Association of Plumbing &

Heating Contractors (APHC), details a number of precautions which installers can take to limit the chances of criminals stealing their tools. The increase of thefts from vans is

widely recognised within the plumbing and heating industry and it is hugely disruptive and costly for installers, impacting work commitments and insurance costs. According to the Insurance Times, claims for the theft of tools from

managing director Dean Jepson described the new thermostate range as “the slimmest RF thermostat around”. Apart from being ultra thin the

device can be wired or RF, while other features include a wide screen, intuitive menu, humidity sensor and a rechargeable lithium battery which Salus will replace after 10 years. At a launch late last month, Dean described the Quantam as “an extraordinary thermostat” that is “easy to install” and was “the most revolutionary thermostat to date”.

Wave app for tablets and smartphones, has an A energy rating and is described as being over 90% energy efficient. The Passo is a balanced flue stove, a technology developed by DRU and now used for millions of gas appliances worldwide. It does not need to be connected to a chimney, so can be installed in a variety of locations around the home. Air is drawn from outside the building for combustion, with waste gases expelled through the same concentric flue. This enables high flames, high efficiency and no depletion of air from within the home, resulting in safe and comfortable heating.

vans have increased by 55% in the past year with the average cost of a claim being £2,685. The best course of action to protect from theft is to remove tools

from vans and to store them securely elsewhere over night or between jobs. However, in the real world this isn’t always practical or feasible. So what other options are available? You could consider fitting a secure tool safe inside your van. This

won’t prevent thieves from accessing the van, but it could prevent tools from being stolen. Parking in a secure area covered by CCTV and parking with the sliding or rear doors against a wall can help to deter thieves. Also protecting windows with grills and using tinted film to obscure the view inside the van can act as a deterrent. You should also mark your tools so if they are recovered you can

prove they are yours. There are smart technology solutions which can be used to mark and help identify your tools. With power tools and other sets of tools it is good practice to keep receipts and paperwork noting the serial numbers as these can help with insurance claims as well as proving the items are yours. Should you become a victim of theft, the first thing to do is to file a

police report and obtain a crime reference number as this is usually required when making an insurance claim. It is also advisable when taking out insurance cover to read the

small print to ensure there are no unexpected surprises should you need to make a claim. APHC is a membership organisation for plumbing and heating

contractors and is committed to providing members with a ‘stamp of approval’, proactive and timely advice, technical and legal support, and a host of discounts. For further information visit www.aphc.co.uk.
