Alliance (EUliance (EUA) has become one of the first in the sector
to become net zero, taking the step to show leadership in the sector that another way of doing business is possible.
The EUA’s chief executive, former UK international development
minister, Mike Foster, said: “We have a mor al duty to become net zer o and it is also in our interest to do so. Climate change, if not addressed, will have catastrophic effects across the globe often hitting the poorest the hardest.
“Here in the UK, increased
flooding, more ferocious storms, more frequent heatwaves all put extra strain on the sector, so we should be leading the wa y on
climate change. Our members are at the forefront of heat and transport decarbonisation initiatives, leading on hydrogen and biomethane clean gases. But we emit carbon too. So, let’s set an example by dealing with it.
“EUA calculated its carbon footprint across the whole of 2019. A total of 51.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide was emitted. We then partnered with ‘The Gold

Standard’ to purchase c arbon offsets to achieve our net zero aims. EUA chose The Gold Standard as it guarantees that its c arbon offsets achieve the highest level of envir onmental integrity and sustainable development.” oster c
Mr Foster continued: “EUA chose to offset its own carbon emissions by supporting a project in Rwanda that provides clean, fuel efficient cooking stoves. This has enormous development co-benefits too. “It often means women spend
less time sourcing wood for cooking, creating time for girls to attend school. It improves indoor air quality as smoke is no longer polluting the
air and it means fewer trees ar e felled providing the wood, which in turn keeps them absorbing carbon from the air.”
“These co-benefits are often over- looklooked by environmentalists k een to achieve net zero. As someone who has worked in the development space, I recognise the value that these carbon offsets bring.” “While we work to reduce our carbon emissions, I am proud that we can still achieve net zero and bring environmentally sound and sustainable development to help some of the poor est people on our planet. If others did the same, what a difference we could make.”
THEWAR ON CARBON: THE END OF THE BEGINNING?
A
new publication from SAV warns that there is a critical bottleneck in the transmission
AV
and distribution of renewable energy in the UK – and that this imposes severe constraints on meeting the country’s decarbonisation aspirations.
Entitled ‘TheWar on Carbon: The End of the Beginning?’, the document calls to mind Winston Churchill,
suggesting that the expansion of wind farms “is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” The authors argue that using wind power only as electricity makes it

very difficult to balance the electricity grid. They therefore suggest that this ‘hard electrification’ is not the answer. Rather, a ‘sector coupling’ approach that sees wholesale decarbonisation of power and gas networks is more pragmatic and cost-effective. SAV managing director, Lars
Fabricius, noted: “Clear choices are emerging, two of which are so-called ‘hard electrification’ and ‘sector coupling’. An important difference between them is energy storage. The contrast in cost and carbon reduction potential is significant, which is why the UK needs to consider its options very carefully.”
The 12-page publication considers the issues of energy storage by power-to-gas and power-to-heat, and goes on to describe a sector- coupled installation. It addresses the elements within SAP 10.1 which are not supportive of heat networks or the Energy Trilemma.
