UK NET ZERO CARBON BUILDINGS STANDARD COALITION LAUNCHES CALL FOR EVIDENCE

T

he team developing the UK’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (the NZCBS) has launched a call for evidence, to help inform and guide

the development of the Standard. Once developed, the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings

Standard will provide a single agreed defi nition and methodology for the industry to determine what constitutes a Net Zero carbon building. The cross-industry group developing the

Standard and championing this initiative includes representatives from Better Buildings Partnership (BBP), Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Carbon Trust, Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Low Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and UK Green Building Council (UKGBC).

Having established governance and delivery

teams, the NZCBS coalition is now calling on UK built environment industry practitioners to supply operational energy and embodied carbon performance data for their buildings. This will support the development of their evidence base over the coming months. Participants are invited to submit data via the

Built Environment Carbon Database (BECD). The deadline for submitting data is 16 December 2022. David Partridge, Chair of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Governance Board, said: “If the real estate industry and built environment is to seriously address its impact on climate change, a universally adopted Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is absolutely essential. We are looking for built environment professionals to contribute data from a number of

different asset types to develop a single, agreed methodology and for all stakeholders in the real estate industry who will be using the Standard to get involved in order to formulate it appropriately. Please contribute to our call for evidence and join us in our update event to learn more about our plans and programme for developing and testing the Standard.” Clara Bagenal George, LETI and chair of the UK

Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Technical Steering Group said: “Not only will this project deliver much needed clarity on how to verify Net Zero carbon buildings in the UK. But it also brings together key organisations

that have been working in this space, to create a robust, industry led Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, created through consensus and collaboration based on science.”

SOUTH EAST TRAINING PROVIDER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

L

ogic4training, the building services training provider, is celebrating 20 years in business with director Mark Krull refl ecting on a period

of evolution for the industry. Opened in 2002, originally as ‘Gas Logic’, the

company started out focussing on Gas ACS re- assessment. Over the past two decades, the business has grown and evolved to meet the demands of the ever-changing sector, adding electric, plumbing, F Gas and renewable training, as well as online health &

safety courses. Logic4training’s fi rst centre in Northolt has been joined by additional training locations in Basildon, Luton and most recently Sittingbourne. Mr Krull said: “The last 20 years has been a period

of evolution across the building services engineering sector, and Logic4training has been along for this ride. From the dawn of the Gas Safe register to the renewables boom stimulated initially by the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed in Tariff (FiTs), we have adapted our business to meet the needs of installers

and the sector at large. While the last few years have been challenging (as they have for everyone), COVID and the resultant lack of students in our classrooms, has stimulated a greater use of e-learning and our exclusive online platform ClubLogic, which features course materials that candidates can access at a time to suit. “Other recent adaptations have included our

portfolio of training programmes for complete new entrants, covering gas, plumbing and domestic electrics, encouraging fresh faces into the industry - from college leavers to career changers. We’re also committed to helping people beyond the classroom and have added online business modules, free websites and Checkatrade membership on our Gold and Platinum entry-level packages. “Building Services Engineering (BSE) continues

to face a skills shortage, so we must encourage the existing installer-base to upskill to meet the demands of a low carbon future, while communicating the great career prospects of our industry to as many people as possible. Part of this challenge is broadening the reach of BSE beyond its traditional customer-base. To that end, we are committed to ensuring our centres are welcoming places, with fl exible course delivery to suit candidates from all walks of life. “Logic4training has recently signed-up to LCL Awards Inclusivity Charter, set up by the Awarding Organisation to encourage inclusivity and diversity in its approved training centres, which should have a knock-on eff ect into workplaces. There’s still a long way to go, but there’s defi nitely a more varied range of people in our classrooms compared with 20 years ago.”
