Beyond the boiler: how schools must adapt

H

VAC in schools is no longer just about heating classrooms. There are also pressing concerns around energy efficiency and IAQ. Adequate ventilation is one of the key issues facing schools –

frequently been linked to poor concentration. This means schools are under increasing pressure to make sure there is an adequate supply of fresh air and that CO2 levels are properly managed. In addition, changing policy and regulation put a heavy burden on

educational institutions which must find a way to cut emissions while operating under tight budgets. Driven by policies such as Net Zero this means schools must move away from gas boilers, and transition to heat pumps and efficient ventilation systems. In our focus on HVAC in schools, Baxi (Pg20) discusses the practical support the heating industry can offer to move the education estate closer to their Net Zero targets. With much focus on maintaining an optimal indoor environment, one issue which is often overlooked, but highlighted on pg 22, is the issue of relative humidity. Elsewhere, don’t miss our Trade Matters feature in which the EUA tackles industry hot topics (Pg10). We are also delighted to announce that entries are open for this year’s HVR Awards. See more on pg 11.
