Slitting & Rewinding

to the web path even more difficult. The Universal X8 has a short web path and achieves its high output without the need for a turret system.

• REPETITIVE STRAIN CAUSED BY POSITIONING CORES

By definition, high output machines produce a lot of finished rolls. Once unloaded, the next set of cores must be pushed onto the differential winding shaft and locked into position. We often hear complaints from the machine operator that the arm/shoulder aches by the end of a shift. The high output of the Universal X8 makes this problem worse. To overcome this, the Universal X8 has a system to automatically load the next set of cores and move them into positioning. The dual positioning arms minimise the time to position the cores. By removing this task from the operator, it removes the risk, but also increases the time available for other tasks.

• EXCESS LIFTING WHEN HANDLING FINISHED ROLLS

Again, a high output machine such as the Universal X8 produces a lot of rolls in a single shift, which all need to be removed

from the machine and palletised. The ARX unloading robot, supplied with the Universal X8, will remove the rolls from the rewind shafts and place them onto a conveyor. This can easily be linked to handling equipment to load the rolls onto a pallet or can be incorporated into a handling system with automatic weighing, automatic labelling inside and outside of the roll, automatic wrapping and robotic palletising.

Most people view automation as a path to increasing output. The route taken by Universal Converting Equipment with the Universal X8 is to remove virtually all the routine tasks from the slitting machine operator. If they are not exposed to a hazard, it is the ultimate in safe operation. There is no need to access the machine whilst it is running. The extensive automation means the machine will complete a job change within two minutes of completing the previous job. This includes setting the position, depth and sideload of all the knives as required by the new recipe. Closed loop feedback eliminates the need for the operator to keep checking as the system tells them that it is correct, which is vital with the

Universal X8 running at 1000 m/min. With two minute set up and rapid unloading of finished rolls, reloading of cores, automatic positioning and automatic start up, the Universal X8 is highly productive. The hazards caused by a turret style rewind are eliminated and access is easy.

UNIVERSAL X8: THE ULTIMATE SLITTING MACHINE; BUILT FOR SAFETY AND PRODUCTIVITY.

Alan Jones, Managing Director of Universal Converting Equipment commented, “Universal Converting Equipment supplies a range of converting equipment on a global basis. We have recently decided to more than double our stand size at Drupa 2024 and can now be found in Hall 15, Stand D51. To meet demand for the Universal X8, we are also planning to triple the size of our machine assembly area, following a move to a new factory premises. After Drupa 2024, a Universal X8 with ARX unloading robot and conveyor system will be available for trials in the recently opened Universal Technology Centre.”
