Adhesive Applications

Adhesives: Augmenting Product Performance

ByKevin Porter, group CEO at Tecman A

dhesive bonding tapes may seem a minor part of a manufacturing process, but their role in augmenting the performance of a product should not be overlooked. Adhesive tapes, quite literally, hold a product together.

They are very rarely the main body or centrepiece, but an ineff ective adhesive tape can easily render a product unusable or at the very least introduce complications, reduce eff ectiveness and create additional costs. Getting the right one is a must for manufacturers.

The bonding process has become more complicated, as ever more complex materials with bespoke uses are developed, meaning new factors need to be taken into consideration when the adhesive tape is selected.

In parallel with material development, adhesive tape technology is continually evolving with new products being developed with advanced properties, including next generation adhesive tapes for bonding diff erential materials.

For manufacturers, this off ers exciting opportunities to streamline application processes, reduce overall costs and enhance products; this gives adhesive tapes an important role as a facilitator of fresh innovation.

We have already seen this in action through smart adhesive tapes, which have been adapted to contain specifi c properties. For example, new thermally conductive bonding tapes, which combine the conductivity of a TIM (Thermal

Die-cut self-adhesive parts with fi nger-lift tabs

interface material) with the adhesion of a semi-structural foamed acrylic tape. Other examples include electrically conductive tapes for use in automotive sensors and batteries.

There is also greater focus on the application of adhesive tapes in the production process. Engineers and material converters are able to confi gure self-adhesive die cut tapes to be applied more effi ciently and eff ectively, reducing application time and overall costs. How an adhesive tape is applied can be just as important as what adhesive is used. It is clear that the adhesive tape industry is ever evolving. Material converters and engineers have levelled up their adhesive tape off ering to manufacturers, curating bespoke products for specifi c materials and uses.

Adhesive tapes disproportionately impact a product’s overall performance; this should not be overlooked by product engineers when undertaking material selection. The benefi ts of partnering with a material converter and leveraging their expertise can prevent or circumvent the production and quality problems which result from an incorrectly selected adhesive tape.

Only by using the most appropriate adhesives tape can you reach your true productive effi ciency and, most importantly, deliver the best quality product possible to customers.
