Adhesive Applications
Evaluating the importance of UV measurements in UV adhesive applications
adhesive is not curing as you would expect, you can use the UV Meter to fi rstly check that the intensity and dosage of the UV light is as required. Also, it can be used as part of the calibration process. By testing a lamp each week the measurement of deterioration can be mapped, allowing adjustments for curing to be made and providing a lead time of when a new lamp is likely to be required.
SUMMARY U
V adhesives off er several benefi ts which make them a popular choice in various industries. Off ering rapid curing times, high strength bonds, enhanced process control and improved aesthetics, UV adhesives are increasing in popularity as a bonding choice for bonding both similar and dissimilar materials, which can be considered challenging for more traditional adhesives. Alongside these benefi ts, considerations need to be made for the curing of the adhesives. Typically, high intensity UV or LED lamps are used to cure UV adhesives. For optimal curing effi ciency, accurate doses of UV need to be administered ensuring the adhesives receives the correct amount of UV light for proper curing; without it, the adhesives’ strength and durability could be compromised.
UV METERS OPTIMISE EFFICIENCY The only way to ensure consistent UV measurements is to perform quality control on the light dose; the easiest way to do this is by using a Hoenle UV Meter, which will measure the intensity and dose of UV light omitted from any lamp or light source, ranging from Dymax through to Loctite and, of course, Hoenle units. For optimal assembly line effi ciency, UV adhesives are given a measured dose and time of UV light to be exposed to; lamp does naturally degrade over time and any slight diff erence in light emission from
a lamp could eff ect the cure. By using a Hoenle UV Meter as part of the quality control process, once per week for example, it would highlight any chances in intensity so the assembly process could be adjusted accordingly. Without a UV meter, it would be impossible to gauge the exact cure time that an adhesive would need to successfully cure.
UV METERS AS A PROBLEM SOLVING DEVICE Additional benefi ts of using UV Meters is as a problem solving device. If you fi nd your UV
Accurate UV measurements ensure that the adhesive receives the correct amount of UV light for proper curing. This aff ects the adhesive’s strength and durability. Consistent UV measurements help maintain the quality of the adhesive application, ensuring that each batch meets the required standards. By monitoring UV intensity and exposure time, manufacturers can optimise the curing process, reducing waste and improving effi ciency. Proper UV measurements help prevent overexposure, which can degrade the adhesive or cause safety hazards. Effi cient use of UV light can reduce energy consumption and material costs, leading to overall cost savings in the production process.
The addition of a Hoenle UV-Meter Measuring device into your quality control process will ensure curing effi ciency, process optimisation, safety and cost savings overall.
