Optimising Slitting and Rewinding: PASABAN’s Expertise in High-Speed Converting Machines

ll the products that make up their portfolio are associated with the Finishing or paper and cardboard converting processes.
In the section of winders, making a simplifi ed
classifi cation helped to distinguish those winders downstream of the paper or cardboard production machine, which typically work with reels on pope shells and are associated with large dimensions from 3 to 7 meters. They are designed to reach high operating speeds (2,200 m/min) depending on the type of substrate to operate. Another classifi cation could include those rewinders that rewind reels of a certain width to smaller widths, intended for slitting or as primary reels to feed other machines, for example, machines for core manufacturing. These rewinders or Slitter Rewinders run at more moderate speeds, such as 600 m/min or 1,500 m/min, depending on the application and substrate type.
Regarding the two drums rewinding concept illustrated in the previous paragraph, the success of a slitting rewinding equipment with a perfect result is based on three main parameters. Firstly, ensuring that the slitting positioning is correct and the stiff ness of the knife holders is rigid enough not to be subject to vibrations that may aff ect the slitting

quality. Secondly, a winding tension that remains perfect even during acceleration/deceleration processes, otherwise the fi nished reels could be overlapped and stacked together. Thirdly and lastly, a hardness control that allows the pressure of the rider roll to decrease as the fi nal reels are formed to compensate for the weight of the reel itself. Today’s vector-controlled AC drive technology allows very fi ne adjustment of the web tension at all times. However, there is a lot of experience in the materials used, rollers, slitters quality, that really make the diff erence between one supplier and another.
In this sense, PASABAN, with their way of conceiving machines, always ensures very solid structural concepts that ensure that the equipment will not be subject to vibrations that could aff ect the result and quality of the fi nal reels. This type of machine with high operating speeds and fast acceleration or deceleration curves may be subject to resonance frequencies that must be avoided, which requires a detailed dynamic study to foresee all kinds of undesired phenomena.
PASABAN pays special attention to the analysis of substrates to be processed and, although we know that converters have to operate with a wide range, it is always suggested to the customer
to provide some samples of the most sensitive materials which will help us to determine the roughness and coating materials of the drums. To conclude, PASABAN has developed interesting solutions to process different types of substrates during its wide number of references, such as paper, cardboard, nonwoven, Pulp.
Among these solutions, we can highlight the following: automatic storage of pope reels, automatic storage of empty popes, automatic slitting positioning, automatic web cutting and gluing system, automatic core cutting and feeding system, fi nal reel ejection to individual stoppers, printing and label application, transport and weighing of fi nal reels and communication with central computer. There are also other types of driven shaft winders that are associated with rewinding materials whose fi nished rolls are generally of small diameter. These can be oriented to process, in some cases, substrates that are very sensitive to marks that would be compromised in a two drum rewinder due to the friction of the same during the formation of the end rolls.
In any case, the keys to perfect winding/ rewinding are the same as mentioned above.
