Industry News Editor’s Comment

One thing I had noticed at this month’s Packaging Innovations and Empack, was the way in which converters are looking at sustainability as a necessity and no longer as something which is viewed as a USP or to give them a market advantage. This was really highlighted in my chat with Mike Baxter, Amcor’s director of Government relations and recycling (Page 18). Many of the other articles in this issue are also based around this issue, whether it is looking at alternatives to fl ame treatment (Page 10) or at how pharmaceutical packaging can become more sustainable (Page 17). As well as the presentation of industry trends and innovations, the show was also a great time to meet some of our readers and contributors face to face. If this is your fi rst time reading, or even the fi rst time you’ve looked into an issue since I have been editor, then welcome and I hope you enjoy the read. I will also be looking to attend more events later on this year, and I hope to meet as many of you as possible. I hope you enjoy this issue and I will be back in a month (when we have later sunsets and the summer will feel within touching distance).

Amcor creates inclusively designed lightweight cap for

Wattwiller Wattwiller is a natural mineral water with zero nitrates and low sodium, a combination that gives it a neutral and balanced taste. The brand is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and in 2020 became the fi rst French SME in the water market to achieve 100 per cent carbon neutrality across its entire lifecycle of products. From production and packaging to bottling and distribution, Wattwiller continues to take action to reduce its impact on the environment and the new cap is part of Spadel’s commitment to developing packaging with an ever-lower environmental footprint.

Amcor and Spadel worked on the innovative closure for a year. Manufactured from HDPE, the closure is

recyclable with PET bottles and lighter compared to the previous design. In addition, Amcor switched to a smaller 26mm neck, which also reduces weight. The closure is made at Amcor’s Frankental, Germany facility. As well as its lightweight design, the closure promotes inclusivity, helping consumers with limited dexterity such as the elderly or people with disabilities. The fl ower-shaped cap combines smooth and ribbed surfaces for enhanced grip and ease of opening.
