Vending hot beverage sector grows by 16 per cent D

espite a slight decline during the covid-19 pandemic, the on-the-go coffee industry continues to grow in popularity according to the latest statistics from the Vending &

Automated Retail Association (AVA). According to the 2022 AVA census, the vending hot beverage industry has increased by more than 16% in the last year and the trade body is waiting in anticipation to see how this trend continues when the new census data is released in May 2023. AVA chief executive David Llewellyn said: “In the UK, we are witnessing the growth of bean-to-cup and alternative milk offerings and as part of this trend, customers are increasingly looking for a more ‘luxury’, café-style coffee experience in a convenient, on-the- go format. In response, operators should consider how they can incorporate this premium coffee experience into their portfolio. “While big brands, such as Costa, still largely dominate

the coffee market in the UK, there is still room for growth and competition. Independent and smaller brands have the opportunity to craft niche offerings that resonate with local preferences, capturing the segment of the market looking for something beyond the ubiquitous chains. “With consumers looking for convenience, the continued success of micro-markets comes as no surprise – growing by 500% in the last five years. The ability of micro-markets to provide a canteen-like experience without the need for staffing makes them especially attractive and a necessity for the modern workplace, and other leisure facilities, when operating under a more flexible or hybrid working model. “The imperative now is for operators to innovate, diversify, and

remain responsive to the dynamic needs and preferences of the consumer. By doing so they will not only meet the current market demand but will be well-positioned to adapt to future trends and capitalise on new opportunities.”
