DISPOSABLES & RECYCLING
Following previous lobbying by the AVA, it has been announced
that any site where vending is the only retail source of product will be exempt from offering a deposit return mechanism, due to the difficulties that it would create. Whilst the AVA supports the aim of this legislation to improve material re-use, encourage recycling and help reduce littering, it is important that our members and the wider vending industry begin to prepare now to ensure they have the right measures in place for when this scheme is officially rolled out. The Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme, is also set to
impact the vending industry – making producers pay for 100% of the cost of disposal products, starting with plastic packaging, which will lead to further costs for operators.
• Competition and Markets Authority Guidelines on Green Washing
The Competition and Market Authority (CMA) recently published the Green Claims Code: a new anti-greenwash guide for all brands and businesses making environmental claims. This includes the statement that all claims must be truthful and accurate, clear and unambiguous and all claims must be substantiated with evidence when required. The AVA supports this legislation and considers it to be a great
step forward in the management of environmental claims and a contribution to genuine progress in this matter. In addition, there is further legislation designed to tackle a wide
range of environmental issues within the industry. These schemes will also have an impact on the vending sector and the AVA is still in discussions with the relevant authorities and government bodies about this, to reflect the needs and thoughts of its members. These include: • Greater consistency in recycling collections in England • Electronic waste tracking to monitor waste movements and focus on tackling fly-tipping • Tackling waste crime – such as littering • Power to introduce new resource efficiency information such as increased labelling on the recyclability and durability of products • Enhanced regulation of hazardous waste • Discussion surrounding the ban or restriction on exporting waste to non-OECD countries
