ADVERTORIAL FEATURE BIOGAS SHOW PREVIEW
ENERGY INDUSTRY GEARING UP for UK AD & Biogas and World Biogas Expo 2017
On 5-6 July at the NEC in Birmingham, UK AD & Biogas and World Biogas Expo 2017 will bring the global biogas community together at the #1 global biogas tradeshow to highlight the huge contribution anaerobic digestion (AD) can make to at least 9 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and what needs to happen to ensure it can make that contribution. With less than 13 years left to meet these Goals, ensuring AD is included in each country’s plan now is critical.
I
n the UK, AD can meet around 30% of domestic electricity or gas demand, or
fuel almost every HGV. Biogas is great for UK energy security,
too – it is generated in the UK and supplies are constant and reliable. AD is delivering home-grown green power to the electricity grid here and now – AD currently produces approximately 10.7 TWh of biogas in the UK, equating to 2.2% of UK gas demand. AD has already reduced UK greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1% annually, and with more support could reduce them by 4%. With businesses facing increasing energy costs and looking for ways to source clean, reliable energy while maintaining profitability, UK AD & Biogas and World Biogas Expo is the perfect event to find out what AD can do to provide renewable energy to UK businesses. On a global scale, in addition to
delivering a significant contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), AD can also generate reliable baseload power locally, which can particularly benefit countries without secure energy supplies. And there’s a much bigger prize too: with anticipated investment in key areas of research, biogas could produce up to 60% of current coal power generation, reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by 18-20%. Over 250 exhibitors throughout UK AD
& Biogas and World Biogas Expo 2017 will be showcasing all the products and services required to commission, build and operate AD plants to produce low-cost, ultra-low-carbon biogas. Delegates will be able to see the latest developments in generating heat and electricity from combined heat and power units, biomethane for the gas grid and for transport, and, for the first time, the opportunity from capping and extracting landfill gas. AD operators will be able to discover the latest research and technological innovations emerging from the market,

helping to ensure you maintain a competitive advantage and allowing businesses from across the UK to benefit from the huge opportunities offered by this exciting industry. The show will feature over 57 hours of content across a conference and two seminar rooms examining issues including: the role of AD in the UK’s industrial and energy strategies; how biomethane can decarbonise transport; innovation in biomethane production; smart cities of the future; financing and incentives; and practical usage of heat. The exciting speaker list includes feature presentations from over 100 speakers, including keynote speaker Professor Jerry Murphy, Leader of Task 37 (Energy from Biogas) at the International Energy Agency, who will highlight the scale of the global carbon reduction challenge and the role AD needs to play to meet that challenge. Other speakers include Shadow Minister for Energy & Climate Change Alan Whitehead MP, ADBA Strategic Advisor Chris Huhne, and speakers from: the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; the Department for Transport; the UK Green Investment Bank; C40; and GE Power & Water, among many others. Delegates will also have the opportunity to see an AD plant at first hand with our three site visits, which will take place on Tuesday 4 July. The evening of Wednesday 5 July will see the sixth annual AD & Biogas Industry Awards, which will celebrate the best of the best in innovation and achievement across all sectors of the AD and biogas industry. With all of the above to look forward
to, this year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever and is the only global biogas event to attend this summer. We look forward to seeing you there!
