he kitchen refrigeration sector has seemingly never been so vibrant, and with more choice than ever,


sophisticated consumers are increasingly looking to smart manufacturers to supply state of the art appliances. According to Luke Harding, Head of


Electrical Retail at AEG UK: “A shift in consumer attitude towards food wastage is helping develop growth within the market. Manufacturers are now developing technology to ease the issue, especially as the topic becomes a much more important and emotive subject to consumers. “With food wastage being such a hot topic, consumers are now making much more informed choices when purchasing appliances. There is a growing concern to preserve fresh produce for as long as possible to ensure that waste is kept to a minimum.

strive to innovate and provide a solution – our most popular being TwinTech technology. This is now featured in over 70% of our built-in and freestanding range of fridge freezers. “This technology has been designed to


prevent food from drying out. Its unique cooling system ensures that produce is stored at the optimum temperature and humidity level – keeping fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. In addition to keeping wastage to a minimum, it also helps to preserve ingredients and retain maximum flavour in the final dish.” Maurizio Severgnini, managing director at


Bertazzoni UK & Ireland, adds: “Last year the market saw significant product innovation, with manufacturers working hard to bring more tangible features to the fore and promote them clearly to ensure consumers could recognise the benefits.


“The landscape for nutrition and cooking also changed, with more people focusing on healthy eating. In line with this trend, fresh produce rose in popularity, meaning shoppers were investing in large format fridge freezers that had the room to store their fresh produce.” But what of the market itself? With repeated


reports of consumer confidence being shaken by a looming Brexit, how have the manufacturers themselves fared recently? “There is no getting away from the fact that less appliances are being sold”, says Stuart Netscher, Head of Category for Cooling at Glen Dimplex Home Appliances; “but the good news is that customers are willing to pay more for their appliances and are investing in quality, durability and added-value features – so in terms of performance trends, value is outperforming volume. The Mintel report of 2018, showed that refrigeration appliances are
