Government champions electrotechnical skills as priority S

kills England recent ‘Assessment of priority skills to 2030’, published 12 August, confi rms that electricians and electrical engineers are two of the careers expected to see the most growth in the next fi ve years.

The assessment also states that electrotechnical occupations are key to multiple sectors, including clean energy, advanced manufacturing, defence and digital technologies.

Andrew Eldred, Deputy CEO of ECA, commented that, “Skills England’s assessment highlights the urgency of the need to reverse a decline in the

skilled electrical workforce over the past fi ve years. “Electricians and SME electrical contractors are now a vital national resource. Closer dialogue and collaboration between Government and industry are essential if we are to meet the ever increasing demand for electrical skills.”

According to Skills England’s analysis, employment demand in priority occupations is expected to increase by 15% by 2030, from 5.9 million in 2025 to 6.7 million in 2030. This is 1.6 times faster than other employment in these sectors, which is expected to increase by 0.8 million, a 9% increase from 8.9 million in 2025.

New Collingwood specifi ers’ guide to emergency lighting C

ollingwood Lighting has produced a specifi ers’ and installers’ guide to emergency lighting to help ensure compliance and safe evacuation of a building.

Anthony Martindale, product manager for Collingwood Lighting, said: “Emergency lighting can save lives. The responsible person for a building is legally responsible for fi re safety and if a building needs evacuating then emergency lighting will minimise panic and help get people

to a place of safety, especially if there is a power outage.

“Our guide will help specifi ers and installers advise the building owner on the best design and system for their building based on a risk analysis and their budget… Designing a compliant emergency lighting scheme is not a one stop solution. It is based on a full risk analysis and involves working closely with the building owner or person who is responsible for the occupants’ safety.”
