Omron launches high inrush capability relay for safe, smart lighting controls

New from Omron Electronic Components Europe is the G5RL-K-EL latching relay tailored for the high inrush performance needed in smart building automation systems and for the control of capacitive loads. The new low-profile power relay –

ideal for controlling fluorescent and LED lamps – has an innovative single contact structure, making it a highly competitive solution. The new 16A G5RL-K-EL latching type

relay is approved to IEC60669-1, and has a high inrush current capability up to 255A, making it ideal for demanding switching environments where loads vary enormously. The device is also compatible with the International Safety Standard for Electrical/ Electronic Household Appliances (IEC60335-1). The latching design saves energy as there is no hold current to keep the relay open. The device is a timely addition to the company’s popular G5RL relay family, explained Andries de

Bruin, Senior European Product Marketing Manager at Omron: “Smart building systems can reduce the need to touch shared surfaces – an important safety measure as we return to working life after COVID-19. So facilities managers are increasingly turning to automated lighting to increase safety as well as save energy. But the highly variable loads typical of these systems demand specialist components. The new G5RL-K-EL is a smart solution to this growing challenge.”

How C-SAM acoustic microscope inspection technology is enabling high-power EV battery switching module production

Custom Interconnect Ltd, (CIL), based in Andover, Hampshire, is a long-established electronics manufacturer engaged in producing some of the most technically challenging electronic assemblies in the UK. Their capability allows them to meet the functional, environmental, and dimensional demands of high- reliability, mission-critical applications in sectors like medical, aerospace, oil & gas, and others. However, challenges can arise for other reasons as well. For

example, CIL is strongly involved in technology for electric vehicles (EVs) of all types, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs). These vehicles have needed innovation in the design of their power delivery networks because of the very high power levels associated with their batteries.

C-SAM acoustic inspection – an innovative inspection technology The solution is to use c-mode scanning acoustic microscope (C-SAM) technology, as acoustic imaging can reach the required depths within the copper conductors. In fact, C-SAM is the final piece of the jigsaw. The silver sintering method used is a very exacting process, requiring precision at every stage. It can only be properly controlled using three complementary inspection methods – X-ray, C-SAM and CT-Scan and CIL has all three. For example, acoustic imaging works by collecting reflected sound waves. Air gaps and voids reveal

themselves clearly by reflecting the signal strongly. By contrast, X-ray images are created by shadow imaging instead of reflection. All material features are shown at once. Rounded objects that would scatter acoustic waves can be imaged in detail.

In areas with a high degree of automation and short cycle times, speed is of the essence. With maximum failure

protection and numerous transmission variants, the ODU- MAC Silver-Line is specifically designed for automatic docking. Now, with the addition of a

quick-change head, this connector range also becomes a potential game-changer, according to ODU. With the ODU-MAC quick-

change head, you can save valuable time and simultaneously extend your connector’s service life, the company said. With just two screws, the interchangeable part of the connector can be easily replaced, making it ready for use again in a matter of seconds. The cable assembly on the base part remains unchanged as the exchanged part is removed from the front. This extends the potential service life of the connector and the quick-change head – from a minimum

of 100,000 mating cycles to a maximum of 10 million mating cycles. Thanks to the ODU SPRINGTAC contact technology, the Silver-Line also offers excellent vibration

resistance and the modular connectors are characterized by a compact and sturdy universal design. Depending on your requirements, you can choose from seven different docking frames and adjust the length

as needed. Then, simply assemble these with the desired modules – ODU’s configurator makes this easy. ODU

Fischer Elektronik GmbH & Co. KG is expanding the heatsink product range with twelve new skived fin solutions from the KSK 1 to 12 series for forced convection. The term skiving is derived from the English meaning translated "peeling off" something. The very close-meshed heatsink structure is produced using a special production machine and enables fin ratios that cannot be produced in the classic extrusion process. In contrast to glued or soldered versions with a similar fin density, skived fin heatsinks are made from one piece and offer a reduced thermal resistance as there is no additional heat transfer through foreign material from the base plate into the individual fins. The new skived fin heatsinks are initially offered as standard in the dimensions 60x60, 80x80, 100x100, 120x120, 140x140 and 160x160 mm, each in two different height designs. In addition, customer-specific heatsink solutions based on customer drawings are also offered and produced. The variance ranges from different heatsink widths and lengths, different thicknesses of semiconductor mounting bases up to an adapted number of fins, spacing and thickness. Skived fin heatsinks are made of a very thermally conductive aluminum alloy and the respective semiconductor mounting surfaces are precisely milled flat. All in all, skived heatsinks are ideally suited for cooling thermoelectric and similar power modules and

they also allow great design flexibility and fast prototyping. Designs made of other aluminum alloys or completely made of copper material on request. In addition to the extensive product range on the subject of "thermal management", Fischer Elektronik

offers additional mechanical processing as well as customer-specific solutions and heatsink geometries. The listed innovations of the skived fin heatsinks as well as all innovations from Fischer Elektronik can also be found at www.fischerelektronik.de

Flexible, accurate, slim & resilient Semitec’s Gymnastic NTC thermistor

If a thermistor could be likened to any sport at the Olympics, then the Semitec JT thermistor would be a gold medal winner in gymnastics! The JT can literally bend over backwards to solve your temperature sensing problems. A worldwide winner, the Semitec

JT has been used extensively in many spacesensitive applications including skin/surface sensing, various wearable technologies including bloodglucose monitors, prismatic & pouch batteries and CPU/IC monitoring. Slim but strong, the JT thermistor is only 0.5mm thick at its sensing tip (thinner than a credit card)

making it the thinnest flexible NTC available world wide. The temperature sensing element is protected/laminated between two polymer layers making it flexible and resilient at the same time. This flexibility allows the JT’s sensor to be placed much closer to the heat source helping to deliver optimum temperature control. The Semitec JT can also operate in extreme temperatures from 50°C to +125°C with highly accurate

1%R25 tolerances and resistance values of 10k and 100k. In addition, the JT thermistors have excellent electrical insulation and so can be safely used where they might come into contact with adjacent live components. Contact us for comprehensive technical advice, samples and bespoke customer solutions.
