assessment structure. IEC 62443 is primarily a process framework applied across organisations and systems. EN 18031 and CRA compliance are product- level, documentation-led conformity exercises. IEC 62443 processes provide a solid foundation for CRA compliance work, but they do not substitute for the product- level assessment requirements.

Where to start

development. Penetration testing run as a pre-submission checkbox exercise rarely produces useful outcomes, and the findings can be awkward to manage. Testing that runs alongside development, with results feeding back into design decisions, is both more effective and more defensible.  Hardcoded credentials in production

builds. Still present in more products than teams realise. Both EN 18031-1 and the CRA treat this as a straightforward compliance failure.

Where IEC 62443 and EN 18031 overlap

Industrial product teams working to IEC

62443 will fi nd the overlap with EN 18031 and CRA requirements more useful than they might expect. Both frameworks require a security risk assessment, documented threat modelling, access control, and lifecycle management processes. The underlying security engineering disciplines transfer well. Where they diverge is in conformity

If you are preparing for CRA compliance, the most practical step is to treat the technical file as a living document from day one of development, not something assembled retrospectively. The security risk assessment, threat modelling records, design decisions, and test evidence should accumulate through the project. That is both good practice for compliance and produces a more defensible, better- documented product.

December 2027 sounds like a long way off. For a product in active development today, the conformity assessment timeline is considerably shorter than the calendar suggests.
