ith more than 999,000 fully electric vehicles on UK roads today and a further 600,000 plug-in hybrids according to the


Zap Map, numbers are rapidly increasing with the demand for power electronic components soaring tenfold over the past five years.


There is a total of 55,301 electric vehicle charging points throughout the UK across 31,445 charging locations according to Zap Map, a 46 per cent increase in the total number of charging devices since January 2023.


Electronic vehicles provide numerous benefits over internal combustion vehicles for the end user, such as a cleaner environment, zero emissions, no congestion charges, instant torque and low noise, lower running costs and government funding incentives.


Electromagnetic devices When charging a contemporary Electric Vehicle (EV), the mains AC needs to be


rectified to the DC required by the batteries, a process that creates fluctuations in the mains signal. When this effect is


multiplied by thousands of EVs, these small fluctuations will create disruptive noise and harmonics. These disturbances can interfere


with frequency sensitive equipment, particularly the power line communication (PLC) interface between electric vehicle supply equipment and the electric vehicle control module managing the vehicle charging functions.


Harmonic interference doesn’t just affect power line communication, it can affect any frequency sensitive application, such as an audio-visual setup which can suffer from unwanted signals. Disruptive harmonics travelling in the kilohertz range over unshielded wires such as power lines can even emit radio waves.
