EMC & Thermal Management Smart heatsink solutions in five simple steps

4) Do you have any size constraints? 5) What is the maximum temperature rise? These questions can be used a reference guide for buyers and will quickly help your heatsink manufacturer identify the thermal impedance required for your heatsink. From aluminium extrusion, to CNC machining and finished heatsinks, GD Rectifiers can provide the service for all of your requirements. We have extensive heatsink manufacturing capabilities and are proud to offer our customers: • 160+ profiles in stock, allowing you to shop by device type or part number

• Bespoke lengths and finishing options available

GD Rectifiers’ managing director, Paul Bentley explains the five simple steps buyers and procurement specialists should consider to help source a smart heatsink design

G

D Rectifiers is one of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of heatsinks and hardware, providing custom solutions to purchasers and

engineers for over 10 years.

As an electronic contract manufacturing partner supplying heatsinks and power assemblies to some of the industries leading OEMs, we play a crucial role in the value and supply chain, offering design, manufacturing and CNC machining services to the customers all over the world.

GD Rectifiers helps solve global electronics manufacturing challenges from design through to fulfilment for customers requiring a flexible heatsink and power assembly manufacturing partner.

We offer a broad range of standard and aluminium heatsinks with over 160 profiles in stock, including hollow fin, solid fin, forced-air cooled and water and oil cooled heatsinks. GD Rectifiers work with customers on standard profiles and can design bespoke, custom-made heatsinks tailored to your specification. Selecting the right heatsink will depend on the application it is being used for and whether it will achieve efficient dissipation results in terms of geometry with the correlated sizes.

Discover our top five considerations on selecting the right heatsink for your application:

22 February 2021

1) The easiest way to select the right heatsink is to calculate the thermal resistance for the application and consider the maximum temperature range and the amount of heat dissipation required from the device. Other important factors that will determine a heatsinks performance include: velocity of the coolant fluid, the thermal conductivity of the material and the thermal interface material. 2) Heatsink manufacturers tend to specify their heatsinks by thermal resistance in the form of numerical values, diagrams or datasheets. It is often more time effective for buyers and engineers to contact the heatsink manufacturers direct to determine the heatsink specification required.

3) Another important element to consider when selecting a heatsink is the installation position of the heatsink. If the optimum mounting direction of the heatsink in the application cannot be done due to mechanical conditions or space requirements, buyers need to consider this in their thermal resistance calculation. Differing heatsink installation positions can reduce thermal resistance depending on the heatsink geometry by 10-15%.

4) Consider all five key parameters when sourcing heatsinks: material, geometry, surface treatment, air velocity and the interface with a device. The interface with semiconductor devices is an extremely important fact to

Components in Electronics

consider, whilst most semiconductor devices and heatsink bases are flat and smooth, at a microscopic level these surfaces can be rough, which results in fewer points of contact and small air gaps between the device and the heatsink. Air has a low thermal conductivity which results in poor conduction of heat from the device to the heatsink. We recommend customers use a thermal interface material to combat this, which can be applied to the base of the heatsink, filling in the gaps and providing increased thermal conductivity. 5) The finish of the surfaces is a crucial factor which helps minimise thermal resistance, including those dissipating the heat and those in contact with the heat source. Buyers and procurement specialists will often partner with heatsink manufacturers and benefit from the technical support and design expertise they can offer.

The five key questions your manufacturer will ask to determine the right heatsink solution for you are: 1) Consider the component you are cooling, what’s the footprint of the device? 2) What is the power you are looking to dissipate? 3) What cooling medium is permissible? Air-cooled, liquid-cooled?
