FOOTWEAR FOCUS ROAD TEST
Chantal Harrison goes Christmas shopping with her new s.Oliver boots
A Sleigh-ride in the Snow C
hristmas always reminds me of the works of Charles Dickens. Of course, there is “A Christmas Carol” that while reminding us of the
need for extending our own generosity at Yuletide, also raises the hope that some of our “Scrooge-like” relations will recant their miserly cheeseparing habits and bestow bountiful gifts on us in the spirit of Christmas or leave use their fortunes in their Wills!
But what brings Christmas home is the earlier and earlier
availability of Christmas presents, decorations and piped shop “muzak” relaying endless versions of “Dreaming of a White Christmas” - which is a fat hope with the state of climate change - as is a “Sleigh Ride in the Snow” which, also for reasons of road safety is unlikely and the maddening “Jingle Bell Rock”!
So, I went shopping for
Christmas gifts planning to meet some girlfriends for coffee, once we were laden like pack mules with our purchases. But of course, when you plan to meet some girlfriends for coffee, with the best will in the world, you can’t dress like a slob. You can’t slob around the shops in that baggy, grey tracksuit and a pair of comfy sneakers, now can you?
So, I wore a pair of designer jeans, a cropped suede, leather jacket that
just the right colour to go with a pair of boots I had been sent to road test. The boots in question are s.Oliver ankle boots with knot detail that have a velvety suede look and come in a chocolate brown that fortuitously was the perfect match for my jacket. I looked stylish but not over the top for a shopping trip.

12 • FOOTWEAR TODAY • FEBRUARY 2020 The word “traipse” was designed for two things: disgruntled children who
drag their feet when you have ticked them off on the way somewhere and for the act of torture going from shop to shop seeking inspiration for Christmas presents for members of the family who seem to have everything and don’t need a bar set (bottle opener, corkscrew and shot measure) on a golfing theme; or more soap/perfume/powder as they already smell wonderful; or chocolates because all of us are pre-diabetic nowadays!
I traipsed around the shops for a couple of hours and the
thing I noticed was that I did not get footsore. Traipsing around shops and being footsore go hand-in-hand (if you’ll forgive the mixed metaphorical message!) But, I realised that the soft foam insole and the non-slip rubber outsole of my s.Oliver boots gave a high level of comfort that I usually expect from those comfy sneakers I wear shopping when I think no one is looking.
So, after ticking off all the Christmas presents, I found my
girlfriends in the coffeeshop. Without exception they were collapsed in chairs surrounded by clusters of bulging, “jolly Christmas shopping bags” and, call it a Christmas carol – they all chorused, “OMG my feet are killing me!” Boy, did I feel smug. I felt even better when I told them my feet were fine and
they looked so admiringly at my s.Oliver ankle boots not only expressing jealousy at the comfort I had enjoyed but saying how cool and fashionable they were.
Which brings me back to Charles Dickens: do you remember in Oliver Twist
Oliver was in the poor house being fed and grim diet of thin gruel and bread and that he was lambasted for asking for more? Well the makers of these boots are s.Oliver and after my shopping experience I would happily ask for more of these boots please!
