The importance of occupational safety grows
in modern industrial and logistical environments as machines and systems become more complicated. Against this backdrop, Wieland Electric introduces its next generation of safety light curtains and safety light grids, which complement the existing array of optoelectronic protection devices and are distinguished by a high level of safety, flexibility, and use.
The new SLG4 series safety light grids were designed for applications requiring dependable access protection over wide areas on machines or in production sites. While withstanding temperatures as high as 70°C, the light grids may be put into action swiftly thanks to their simple software configuration and plug-and-play installation. Clearly visible LEDs also enable immediate on-site diagnostics, reducing downtimes. Furthermore, the durable aluminium housing and protection rating IP65/67 in accordance with EN 60529 ensure that the optoelectronic protective devices perform reliably even in adverse environmental situations.

manufacturing base with Milturn acquisition

The acquisition of Milturn fulfils a strategic objective to significantly improve Vision Engineering’s position global position as a leading designer and manufacturer, by adding scale and capability to the company’s existing UK and USA manufacturing base. Established in 2001 and one of the first UK firms to achieve ISO 9001 2015, Milturn Precision Engineering has 21 highly skilled machinists and anodisers specialising in high quality components, including high performance lens cases for the optical /movie/ camera industries, marine and automotive engineering and high end shop/hotel fitting, Milturn also has an anodising facility to improve the quality and durability of finished components.

Green engineering centres launched in Kent to tackle sustainable skills gap A
range of new training courses and the latest in 3D and robotic technology have launched to help engineering businesses in the south-east looking to increase automation in their operations. East Kent Colleges Group, an award-winning further education and training provider based in Kent has launched two green engineering centres in Ashford and Canterbury – plus a mechatronic laboratory.
These centres will support a range of new training courses focused on skills that support decarbonisation, as well as a resource for businesses looking to solve a challenge or test new concepts or products. The aim is to help the engineering industry to decarbonise the sector and drive greater sustainability. East Kent Colleges Group intends to use the project to support local employers and deliver the skills they will need now and into the future. A series of virtual workshops are also planned to focus on best practice in decarbonising a future-proofing businesses of all sizes.
Sustainable manufacturing consultancy HSSMI supported East Kent Colleges Group in mapping out the new facilities over the course of 18 months, including the latest in collaborative robot technology.

Equipment installed includes a training version of production line six-axis robots, production rigs to scan and track packaging and a 3D virtual reality room, that will allow businesses to map their factory floor and plan for future automation. Graham Razey OBE, Chief Executive Officer for East Kent Colleges Group, said: “FE colleges have always been at the forefront of societally transformational leadership projects, and it’s great kickstarting a green revolution for businesses. “Our new engineering centres will help to develop the skills of the future for our students, whilst ensuring employers have the opportunity to test their own decarbonisation plans in a sector leading environment.”
East Kent Colleges Group received a share of £5.6 million funding through the government’s Skills Development Fund scheme using the money in support of addressing a sustainable skills gap in engineering. According to government data, a third of UK businesses do not believe their staff are currently equipped with the skills necessary to achieve net zero. The new centres form part of a broader Kent skills strategy for a greener, more sustainable economy and ensuring the Kent and Medway region is ready for the opportunities ahead.
