n 2023/24, manufacturing accounted for 16 of the 138 work-related fatalities in Great Britain. According to HSE data, non-fatal incidents remain

widespread - with over 604,000 injuries recorded across all sectors, and nearly 46,000 of those in manufacturing alone. While long-term trends suggest non-fatal injuries are decreasing across the sector,  still work to do.

When it comes to safety, there is a powerful opportunity in rethinking how essential tools, materials, and protective equipment are sourced, delivered, and maintained. By doing so businesses can reduce the numbers reported by the HSE, and also create workplaces where every employee feels protected and valued. In industrial environments, every tool, every piece of protective equipment, and every material supplied to a site plays a part in reducing risk. Yet, too often, supply chain decisions are driven by cost or convenience alone, overlooking their direct impact on workforce wellbeing. When supply is managed intelligently, it can help prevent accidents, ensure legal compliance, and build a culture where safety is embedded into every process. Smarter supply is about more than

 selecting equipment, tools, and materials that meet rigorous safety standards, ensuring they are delivered on time, and maintaining stock levels so teams are never forced to improvise with unsafe alternatives. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a duty on employers to minimise workplace risks “so far as is reasonably practicable.” This makes supply chain quality a frontline safety consideration.

In practice, this could mean guaranteeing that PPE meets the latest  Regulations 1992 (amended 2022) or ensuring that all supplied tools are inspected before reaching the workforce. By embedding safety into procurement processes, manufacturers can address

Running out of safety-critical equipment creates immediate risks. A smart supply system uses real-time inventory tracking to anticipate shortages before they occur. Through automated stock monitoring, predictive replenishment, and on-site dispensing technology, Rubix’s VMS ensures that PPE and safety- critical items are available exactly when and where they’re needed. These systems remove the need for manual stock checks and emergency orders, while also providing a full audit trail for compliance. By integrating VMS, businesses gain the visibility, control, and reliability needed for a smarter supply chain. Smarter supply goes beyond the procurement team
