EVENT Embedded World Exhibition & Conference
Embedded World: the embedded community’s meeting place
This year Nuremberg will once again become the meeting place for the global embedded community. The entire industry will meet at the Embedded World Exhibition & Conference from March 14th-16th
B
y adopting the statement “Embedded. Responsible. Sustainable.”, the 2023 Embedded World trade fair and
conferences will focus on key topics for the future of this industry: factors that defi ne a responsible approach to AI, the background to the EU Cyber Resilience Act, ways to make embedded products and the digital world more sustainable, and a lot more.
Sustainability: The topic of the century “The signifi cance of embedded systems can hardly be overestimated when it comes to the topic of the century – sustainability,” said the Chairman of the Embedded World Conference, Professor Axel Sikora. Nürnberg Messe is also adopting sustainability: Since 2016, only green electricity is used at exhibition halls, with now almost all of them converted to LED lighting. In catering, sustainable packaging solutions and local produce are being used. Embedded World already houses reusable system stands and from 2024 there will be sustainably-certifi ed exhibition stands. The event organisers are also looking into eco-certifi ed carpeting and switching to recyclable paper for the ticketing. “Individually these may appear small steps, but together they pave the way toward more sustainable event execution,” said Benedikt Weyerer, event Executive
Director. “We are constantly looking for more sustainable substitutes.”
Conference programmes The two conferences, which take place in parallel to Embedded World, make it the perfect place to develop specialist knowledge and discuss current topics relating to embedded systems. The Steering Board of the Embedded World Conference 2023 has curated a total of 65 sessions and 19 classes from more than 360 submissions, with 200 speakers from 26 countries. “We bring together many diff erent and future-orientated facets of system development. The lectures and the class on ‘embedded Rust’ and ‘tinyML’ are a proof of this,” said Sikora. The three keynotes also capture the zeitgeist. Daniel Cooley, CTO of Silicon Labs, will talk about “Charting the Connected Future”, whereas Professor Albert Heuberger from Fraunhofer IIS will address the impact of chip design and production on Europe’s technological leadership. Professor Ali Hessami, Chair IEEE P7000 Technology Ethics Standard, will pose ethical questions related to AI and autonomous systems – a hot topic,
since related EU certifi cation is currently being discussed.
The focus of the Electronic Displays
Conference 2023 will be on technical developments in automotive and industrial displays, interfaces, touch with optical bonding, and micro LEDs. A keynote session will address the global development of the display market. The programme has been designed to refl ect the dynamics of the display industry.
Cool industry meeting place “Embedded is a cool industry with even cooler people. At Embedded World, young meets old, experience meets newcomer, national meets international, start-up meets global player, and everyone is focused on embedded systems – that’s what makes this industry so appealing,” said Weyerer. Then, there are the Embedded awards, the exhibitor forums and the Embedded World Student Day. “On the third day of Embedded World, in addition to the usual business activity in the halls, more than 1,000 students can be seen roaming the exhibition grounds. Here, you can already get a glimpse of the future of the industry,” added Weyerer. Since 2019 there has also been an Embedded World start-up area (left), with one of the fi rst participants being a French software start-up that also won an Embedded award. “This company’s director said that Embedded World is the most important trade fair for him, because he made his fi rst contacts with a future investor here, and his business is now ramping up,” said Weyerer. “That’s great feedback and an incentive for us to expand this kind of format.”
The embedded community can therefore once again look forward to three exciting days at the show and its conferences.
