PPMA SHOW REVIEW

TAKING A LOOK ‘INSIDE THE SHOW’

We look back on some of the highlights of this year’s PPMA Show, which took place in September at the NEC

his year’s PPMA Show was brimming with innovative technologies, products and systems from over 350 exhibitors. Automate UK’s free PPMA app, which was a new addition this year, certainly enhanced the visitor experience, and made navigating the show simple and seamless. Gregg Wallace, presenter of ‘Inside the Factory’, spent the day exploring the show, talking to exhibitors and visitors alike.

There were many, many highlights of the show, here’s just a snapshot:

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions (WMFTS), a maker of peristaltic pumps and associated fluid path technologies, showcased its product range at the show. WMFTS demonstrated its peristaltic and sinusoidal pumps, which enable companies to optimise efficiencies and increase productivity while reducing energy costs, water use, and waste with shear-sensitive pumping.

Visitors to the stand also learned how Certa Sine pumps from MasoSine, maintain yield while increasing output in food and beverage and biotechnology applications. The Qdos range was also on show, the highlight being the Qdos H-FLO, the latest addition to the range which is designed specifically for higher flow rates up to 600l/hr.

Waste Mission, a leading UK-based waste management company, unveiled its custom- built Waste Management Portal at PPMA. This innovative platform is designed specifically for contracted customers, enabling them to manage their waste more effectively and sustainably than ever before, staying up to date with waste streams, compliance and ESG targets.

Nicola Guest, Group Marketing Manager,

said: “Everything you need is at your fingertips and simplifies what has historically been a complex process - making sustainability simple.”

Markforged recently introduced the first metal and advanced composite industrial 3D printer, and its UK partners Mark 3D were at the PPMA show to provide live demos of the FX10 printer in action. With the FX10 Metal Kit, the FX10 becomes the world’s first industrial 3D printer that can print both metal filaments and composites with continuous fibre reinforcement.

Mark 3D was also on hand to show hybrid parts and discuss real world applications where industrial 3D printing is helping to reduce downtime and speed up production lines on factory floors.

In addition to the hybrid parts on display, Mark 3D had parts on its stand similar to the suction jig designed for the packaging production line at a Danone Dairy plant.

on the innovative Apex Dynamics Gearbus, which regularly visits customers throughout the UK and Ireland.

At the show, Apex Dynamics UK promoted the ways in which planetary gearboxes shape our world and officially launched two major new product ranges – zero backlash disc and elastomer couplings and its MG and MGH ranges of planetary gearboxes, ideally suited to high radial and axial loads, and rack and pinion applications.

On show was Apex Dynamics’ range of planetary and hypoid gearboxes, rack and pinion systems, and the new couplings. Experts from the company were on hand to explain the central role planetary gearboxes play in shaping our world. A video was shown to visitors demonstrating the impressive precision and accuracy planetary gearboxes can achieve using a fragile 0.5mm pencil lead and two counter-rotating discs, each controlled by a servo set up. The live demo itself can be seen

OMRON showcased the smarter, faster, more efficient future of manufacturing at this year’s show. The company offered demonstrations of the high-speed DELTA robot, with pioneering conveyor tracking functionality for faster and more flexible picking and packaging applications. It also showcased Automation Playback, a standard but innovative feature on its NX5 automation controller. Automation Playback is designed with simplicity in mind. Implementation is straightforward — just select recorded information, choose the REC button, and set the recording time. It's as easy as that, allowing engineers to focus on problem-solving rather than complex setups. Metal detection and X-ray are often viewed as competing technologies. Yet, used together they add an additional - and often necessary - layer of recall security, food safety and quality control. This was the message from Fortress Technology Europe, who unveiled its latest innovation at the show, the Icon X-ray. Fortress Technology also collected the trophy for Innovative Processing System Multi- Purpose Technology at the Automate UK Awards 2024 dinner.

Another winner at the awards was Endoline Automation, where the company was recognised within the Innovative Packaging Machinery category. The award celebrated Endoline’s pioneering 407 High-Speed Random Case Gluer, a fully automated top and bottom random case gluer.

The company also debuted its 900 series Wet Paper Tape Case Sealing solution at the PPMA Show. The wet paper technology will also be available across Endoline’s entire case sealing range of random and pre-set machinery in both fully and semi-automatic models.
