ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE: FLOW & LEVEL CONTROL

ENGINEERED FOR EXTREMES: MEASUREMENT YOU CAN RELY ON

VEGA sensors are designed to meet safety challenges. They measure level and pressure with high precision, even under extreme conditions, helping make processes safe and efficient

cross a wide range of industries, from manufacturing to energy and beyond, processes are becoming more complex, interconnected and demanding. With this comes risk, and even a minor oversight can lead to production downtime, equipment damage or threats to people and the environment. That’s why safety remains a top priority, grounded in explosion protection, functional safety and cybersecurity.

A

Explosion protection: tackling hazardous zones

In potentially explosive atmospheres, strict zone classifications guide the safety measures and suitable instrumentation required. Each zone reflects how frequently explosive atmospheres may occur: • Zone 0 (gas) / Zone 20 (dust): explosive atmosphere is continuously present or has long-term presence – e.g. inside tanks containing flammable liquids. • Zone 1 / Zone 21: explosive atmospheres occasionally occur under normal operating conditions, e.g., at plant ventilation ports • Zone 2 / Zone 22: explosive atmosphere occurs rarely and for short periods, e.g. in the vicinity of pumps

VEGA’s measurement technology is engineered for these zones, certified to meet standards like ATEX and IECEx and comes equipped with: • Intrinsic safety (Ex i) – limiting energy to prevent ignition. • Flameproof enclosures (Ex d) – containing internal explosions. Their robust construction, including

stainless steel and PTFE, ensures resistance to aggressive media.

Functional safety: guarding against system faults

Functional safety ensures that even if something goes wrong, equipment responds in a safe, predictable way. Standards such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 define Safety Integrity Levels (SIL1–SIL4), guiding both equipment manufacturers and operators.

concept in devices like the VEGAPULS 6X: • IEC 62443 certification: instruments are designed to meet high security standards. • Encrypted communication: protects against unauthorised access and data manipulation. • Event memory and integrity check: records tampering attempts and checks firmware updates.

VEGA's dedicated security team (PSIRT) ensures threats are quickly identified and appropriate action is taken.

VEGA sensors like the VEGAPULS 6X are built to meet SIL3 requirements. Advanced diagnostic functions detect potential faults at an early stage and switch the sensor to a safe state if necessary. The digital documentation of tests supports plant operators in effectively implementing and monitoring safety standards.

Cybersecurity: securing the connected plant

With the rise of digitalisation, protecting field instrumentation from cyber threats is critical. VEGA supports this with a multi-level security

A second line of defence VEGA offers a “Second Line of Defence” for safety-critical applications – an additional layer of protection behind the process diaphragm, ensuring measurement even under difficult conditions. Gas-tight feedthroughs and flameproof enclosures, such as those used for VEGAFLEX or VEGABAR, ensure that external influences do not affect the sensors, reduce the risk of breakdown and support continuous long- term measurement.

From explosion protection to cybersecurity, VEGA’s sensors help safeguard processes across demanding industrial processes. It’s smart safety – built-in by design.
