ESS EXPO 2025 (WWEM) REVIEW
ALL THE NEWS FROM ESS EXPO
Environmental Services & Solutions (ESS) Expo 2025 (including WWEM Expo) unveiled a packed speaker programme, featuring government leaders and industry trailblazers, at the NEC earlier this month
of the environmental sector, under one roof at the NEC Birmingham. . ESS Expo provided a platform for high-level
E
discussion, bringing together government speakers, industry leaders, cutting-edge suppliers, and industry innovators. ESS Expo grew in 2025 with the addition of two
new events: the Complete Auto Recycling Show and Metals Recycling Event (CARS & MRE), and the Geotechnical Engineering & Operations Expo (GEO Expo). The Water, Wastewater & Environmental
Management Expo (WWEM Expo), previously known as WRM, has also been expanded, and the Air Quality & Emissions Expo (AQE Expo), formerly APC Expo, joined the line up. These new shows joined the existing Resource
& Waste Management Expo (RWM Expo), Energy, Fuels & Decarbonisation Expo (EFD Expo), and Contamination & Land Remediation Expo (CLR Expo), solidifying ESS Expo as the UK’s leading hub for environmental showcase. Each of the seven shows featured a number of
engaging talks by industry experts, combining knowledge with a focus on current environmental matters, current policy and regulation, and their impact.
Extreme conservation conversations
Renowned wildlife presenter and conservationist Michaela Strachan led this year’s powerhouse keynote line-up with Extreme Conservation Conversations: Uncovering Climate Change Case Studies. Taking to the stage at the Net Zero Summit Theatre, Michaela shared gripping, first- hand accounts from the frontlines of climate change, spotlighting endangered species, vanishing habitats, and the urgent need for global action. Also on centre stage was Rishi Jain, Director of
Impact at Liverpool FC, who presented an exclusive session titled Great Presence Brings Great Responsibility: Delivering A Sporting Standard Towards Sustainability 'The Red Way'. They were joined by a standout roster of
headline speakers across the ESS Expo, including Alex Sobel MP, Mike Reader MP and Margaret Bates of DEFRA, each bringing deep technical expertise and bold ideas to the most pressing
nvironmental Services & Solutions (ESS) Expo, the UK’s largest environmental event, featured seven shows spanning all corners
challenges facing energy, policy, infrastructure, and the circular economy today. Among the standout features of ESS 2025
was the newly expanded Water, Wastewater and Environmental Management (WWEM) Expo, a comprehensive platform addressing the water sector's most urgent challenges. With over 150 suppliers, the exhibition floor was a nexus of cutting-edge solutions for real-time monitoring, water management, and advanced wastewater treatment. Exhibitors like CSignum and Xylem Water
Solutions UK showcased real-time monitoring technologies, including IoT-enabled sensors and wireless communication systems, to address increasing regulatory demands. Additionally, IDEXX Water, Lovibond Water Testing, and Hach presented rapid, accurate testing instruments for lab and field use, from automated "lab in a box" systems to compact photometers for on-site measurements. In wastewater treatment, companies like
ATAC Solutions and StormHarvester spotlighted novel technologies designed for enhanced efficiency and resilience. These innovations encompass energy-efficient systems and AI- powered analytics to predict and mitigate flooding and pollution events, providing crucial tools for water infrastructure. WWEM Expo featured three dedicated
arenas - the WWEM Keynote Theatre, WWEM Technical Theatre, and WWEM Monitoring Theatre - and hosted over 35 sessions. Here, industry luminaries discussed critical issues, from sustainable water resource to digital transformation. Speakers included Judy Procter, Deputy
Director for Water Regulation at the Environment Agency; Marc Hannis, Principal of the Ofwat Innovation Fund; and Carolyn Cadman, Chief Sustainability and Natural Resources Officer at South West Water. They explored critical themes such as From Source to Zero: Natural Resources and the Water Sector’s Carbon Journey, Delivering Digital Transformation in the Water Sector from a Real-Time Control Perspective, and "Innovating for Water’s Future: Opportunities Through the Ofwat Innovation Fund." A new and highly anticipated feature was
SuDS Live, a dynamic forum for live demonstrations and updates on Sustainable
Drainage Systems (SuDS). This initiative underscored the pivotal role SuDS play in management of water resource. Practical sessions delved into the real-
world implementation of SuDS. Small Scale Retrofitting: Key Principles and Case Studies shared insights on the necessity of fitting SuDS into urban areas, tackling common challenges like picking the right contractor and engaging the community.
Music & entertainment
Attendees of ESS Expo discovered opportunities for networking and connection across the entire environmental sector. Visitors were entertained with music on the ESS Live Stage, and there was a more relaxed atmosphere at the outdoor networking space, the Inn on the Green. The event’s social calendar was also packed with fringe networking events, including the exclusive ESS Connect Party, which brought together 400 of the industry's finest. ESS Expo hosted three prestigious awards
to honour the individuals and companies driving positive change in the UK’s environmental sector and beyond. The Environment 100, the Environmental Monitoring Awards, and the 35 Under 35 awards celebrated the sector's most influential figures, groundbreaking initiatives, and emerging talent.
