FEATURE PUMPS, VALVES & ACTUATORS A one-type-fits-all-solution

olybdenum is a raw material used in the electronics, steel, and
chemical industries. It is commonly utilised in the production of smart phones and to make stainless steel more chemically resistant. North Ridge Pumps was approached by a company that manufactures various grades of molybdenum, who required pumps for the dosing of calcium hydroxide, 30% concentration sulfuric acid, and for the transfer of precipitation sludge for several of their processes. The ideal solution for the customer was
to have one model of pump suitable for all processes and fluids, which was certainly a challenge, as all materials must be chemically resistant to all the fluids being transferred. Fortunately, North Ridge Pumps was familiar with these requirements because it had had

MODULARITY EQUALS VERSATILITY AND RELIABILITY
HMD Kontro Sealless Pumps has introduced the CSA and CSI Pump ranges. The Frame 1 groups of sealless pumps take a modular approach to combining performance with durability and versatility while ensuring industry and regulatory safety compliance to ASME, ISO and IECEx standards. Specifically designed for maximum part interchangeability, to reduce inventory, ease of onsite servicing
and upgrade, the CSA and CSI ranges have been developed to maximise uptime while delivering cost savings through improved efficiencies, and are available on short lead times. Sealless pumps are playing an ever-greater role in meeting the challenge of transferring high volumes of
hazardous chemicals and other liquids in maximum safety. Indeed, in some cases more stringent regulations and local regulatory agencies are mandating their use. The CSA and CSI ranges offer total containment, eliminating potentially dangerous leaks, essential for handling hazardous, toxic or hot substances, and preventing the loss of high value product. The new pump design allows for easy on site replacement, servicing and maintenance without the need for
hot working or specialist tools, minimising production downtime and disruption. Ease of interchangeability helps cut lead times and results in more efficient management of the spare parts inventory. The containment shell can be provided either
in metal or as HMD Kontro’s ZeroLoss format, which increases resistance against system upsets and saves energy. A fully contained casing gasket further improves safety by eliminating the risk of blowouts. The new pumps are available now from
selected reseller Channel Partners across the US and Europe, the modular nature enabling them to be tailored to specific customer requirements and delivered rapidly. HMD Kontro

success in a similar application in the past. The company knew that a peristaltic hose pump was a suitable solution for this customer, as it is one of the most versatile and configurable units available. Chemical and sludge applications are ideal for peristaltic pumps as there is
Peristaltic pumps offer configurable options
only one internal part that encounters the fluid, the hose, and this can be manufactured in various grades of rubber to ensure corrosion resistance. The seal- less design eliminates the possibility of fluid leaking and entering the motor, the enclosed casing further ensures that if the hose does burst, no liquid will escape into the external environment. As the internal hose is the only wearing
part, maintenance is a cost effective and simple process for engineers on site. Hose pumps are positive displacement and self-priming by nature and the absence of a mechanical seal allows the pump to run dry indefinitely without fear of damage and premature wear. As an extra, the casing was coated with
Halar (ECTFE), which protects the casing from chemical attack in the event of a hose leakage, providing further protection and assurance for all staff at the facility. Polypropylene flanges were installed as per the customer’s requirements, and there are options for BSP, NPT or Tri-clamp connections in PVC or stainless steel if required. The customer will vary the flow rate
using an external variable frequency drive to achieve lower flow rates for dosing of the acids/alkalis and increase the speed for higher flow rates when transferring the sludge. The customer was offered optional extras of an integrated variable speed drive and hose leakage sensor, but these were not required. The leakage sensor sends a signal to an external control panel and shuts off the pump in the event the hose bursts, the fluid is then contained in the casing until maintenance is performed. Other configurable options for the peristaltic pumps include ATEX motors for non-safe areas, mobile trolleys for portability around site, food grade versions, PTC sensors and forced air cooling for the motor.
