Why is FFKM in short supply?
There is a global supply problem which has impacted the entire sealing industry, causing mass disruption to operations which rely on FFKM for effective, reliable sealing performance. There are five key challenges in FFKM supply at this time:
Shortage of ingredients
Producing FFKM involves a complex recipe with highly specified ingredients. If just one ingredient has its supply disrupted, FFKM cannot be produced. There are currently several ingredients facing supply shortages – with some FFKM suppliers heavily reliant on just one or two suppliers for their ingredients.
Sanctions on Russia
Carbon black is one of FFKM’s specified ingredients, and Russia accounts for almost a third of the global supply. With recent sanctions placed on Russia, carbon black availability has been reduced substantially, with price increases on non-Russian carbon black sources.
Energy crisis in China
Some FFKM ingredients are manufactured mainly in China. With enforced reduction of power consumption leading to widescale rolling blackouts, material supply has been heavily impeded.
Competition with other markets
FFKMs are critically important in semiconductor and pharmaceutical production. With huge surges in demand for products from these industries in recent years, other industries have faced significant shortages in availability.
