Wieland’s New sensor PRO safety limit switches
T
he new sensor PRO safety limit
switches (series SLS) from Wieland provide safe position monitor- ing in virtually any industrial application. With a metal actuator that can be turned and swapped without tools, sensor PRO SLS switches are a highly reliable position mon- itoring solution rated to IP66/ 67. Series SLS switches are suitable for use in conveyor
object detection, end-position control, door position detec- tion, and many other safety applications. Actuation of the switch contacts is monitored by Wieland’s safety relays, samos®PRO COMPACT safety controller, or similar devices and will shut down the machine immediately, addressing any safety hazard. The new switches have self-cleaning contacts that pro-
vide a maximum reliability of 1mA at 24VDC and a life of up to 30 million operations. They offer the highest of switch- ing even at very low currents and are extremely robust due to the metallic actuator and mounting bracket. Series SLS switches provide tool-free turning of the actuator and tool-free replacement of the actuator and actuators can be rotated or swapped in 45 ° increments by pulling the fas- tening clip.

n the energy management arena, the ability to better monitor com-
bustion air, fuel gas flow and com- pressed air can help identify losses that over short periods of time can affect a plant’s profitability. The two key phrases when discussing instrumentation for the aforementioned are “cost effec-
tive” and “return on investment.” Without question, any situation can be resolved if enough financial resources are thrown in its direc- tion. The idea is to realize the ben- efit in the shortest time frame possible at the most reasonable cost. Thermal dispersion mass flow meters meet these criteria.
Thermal Dispersion Mass Flow Meter Thermal mass flow meters are primarily used in air and gas flow measurement applica- tions. The meters consist of a transmitter and probe with temperature sensors (RTDs) located in the pins at the bottom of the probe. The reference sensor measures the process temperature and the other sensor is heated to a specific temperature above the reference. As the flow rate increases, heat gets taken away from the heated sensor. More power is then applied to the heated sensor to maintain the temperature difference. The relationship between power and mass flow rate is established during factory calibration.
Thermal mass flow used in air and gas flow measurementCombustion air flow meas- urement to a boiler is important to maintain a stoichiometric ratio with the amount of fuel being supplied. Too little air flow can result in incomplete combustion along with additional carbon monoxide or pollutants depending on the fuel being burned. On the other hand, too much air flow can cool the furnace and waste heat out of the stack. The repeatability of the air measurement is essential to obtaining the most efficient air-fuel ratio (AFR)difference. The relationship between power and masy c Measuring fuel gas flow (natural gas or propane) usage to individual combustion
sources compared to the output (steam/hot water) can help optimize boiler efficiency and better manage energy consumption. Knowing individual boiler performance may also assist in operating those offering the best efficiency. Lowering fuel consumption is one of

the easiest methods to reduce cost and improve profits. A key role in energy and facilities management is making compressed air systems
more reliable and efficient. Valuable resources are wasted when a leak goes unnoticed or cannot be easily isolated. DBIS estimates that 20–30% of compressor output goes to leaks accounting for thou-
sands of pounds in electrical consumption for wasted air. More extreme cases are the purchase cost of additional/larger compressors to fulfil compressed air needs. The first step to reducing utility costs is to measure the usage. Thermal dispersion technology can be used in branch lines for determining consumption in different sections of the plant or as a relative indication of leakage. Magnetrol’s Thermatel Enhanced Model TA2 Thermal Mass Flow Meter provides reliable
mass measurement for air and gas flow applications. The powerful, yet easy to use, elec- tronics are contained in a compact flameproof enclosure. The TA2 is available with both insertion probes and flow body design for smaller pipe sizes The TA2 offers excellent per- formance at an exceptional value. The TA2 is often utilized to manage energy costs or to meet environmental regulations
in a variety of industries. TA2 total cost of ownership is reduced through ease of installa- tion, calibration verification in the field and reduced maintenance, with no moving parts or ports to plug. Since the measurement is based on heat transfer, the TA2 has reliable performance at low gas flows and pressures where other technologies have difficulties.
