HAZARDOUS AREAS & SAFETY

In this article, Kyle Hague, Chief Operating Officer at Rubix UKII, explores how strategic MRO supply chain management can play a critical role in protecting manufacturing workforces and improving workplace safety outcomes

THE LINK BETWEEN SUPPLY & SAFETY

I

n 2023/24, manufacturing accounted for 16 of the 138 work-related fatalities in Great Britain. According to HSE data, non-fatal incidents remain widespread - with over 604,000 injuries recorded across all sectors, and nearly 46,000 of those in manufacturing alone. While long-term trends suggest non-fatal injuries are decreasing across the manufacturing sector, these figures are a reminder that, while the sector has made huge strides in safety, there is still work to do.

When it comes to safety, there is a powerful opportunity in rethinking how essential tools, materials, and protective equipment are sourced, delivered, and maintained. By doing so businesses can not only reduce the numbers reported by the HSE, but also help create workplaces where every employee feels protected and valued. In industrial environments, safety forms the foundation for operational success, going far beyond compliance requirements. Every tool, every piece of protective equipment, and every material supplied to a site plays a part in reducing risk. Yet, too often, supply chain decisions are driven by cost or convenience alone, overlooking their direct impact on workforce wellbeing. When supply is managed intelligently, it can help prevent accidents, ensure legal compliance, and build a culture where safety is embedded into every process. Smarter supply is about more than sourcing

products efficiently. It means selecting equipment, tools, and materials that meet rigorous safety standards, ensuring they are delivered on time, and maintaining stock levels so teams are never forced to improvise with unsafe alternatives. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a duty on employers to minimise workplace risks “so far as is reasonably practicable.” This makes supply chain quality a frontline safety consideration. In practice, this could mean guaranteeing that PPE meets the latest specifications under the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 (amended 2022) or ensuring that all supplied tools are inspected before reaching the workforce. By embedding safety into procurement processes, manufacturers

can address potential hazards before they reach the shop floor or construction site. Manufacturers that invest in smarter supply systems enjoy a safer, more productive workforce. Workers have consistent access to the right tools and equipment, reducing the risk of injury caused by inadequate or faulty resources. And, when exploring suppliers, manufacturers should look for those that are able to provide full product traceability, offering reassurance that safety certifications are genuine and up to date. With deep expertise in PPE and safety- critical products, Rubix helps manufacturers select equipment that is fully fit for purpose and compliant with regulations. Our inventory management solutions, including VMS (Vendor Management Solutions), ensure that essential items are always available in the right quantities, avoiding shortages and keeping workforces protected. This reliability also improves efficiency. When the right materials are available at the right time, projects stay on schedule without unsafe workarounds. Over time, smarter supply fosters trust between management and workforce, with employees confident that their well-being is valued as much as productivity. Sourcing from reputable manufacturers and verified distributors is critical. Cheap, unverified products may seem cost-effective, but lower quality standards can lead to failures in use, with potentially serious consequences – from safety through to downtime. Establishing a robust quality control process, including supplier vetting to on-site inspection, ensures that only compliant, fit- for-purpose items reach the workforce. Safety compliance does not end with delivery. Maintaining accessible records of product specifications, certifications, and inspection results ensures traceability and simplifies regulatory responses. Digital record storage allows instant retrieval during audits or investigations, strengthening an organisation’s position. Running out of safety-critical equipment creates immediate risks. time inventory tracking to anticipate shortages before they occur. Rubix’s VMS solutions are a proven way to achieve this. Through automated stock monitoring, predictive replenishment, and on-site dispensing technology, VMS ensures that PPE and safety-critical items are available exactly when and where they’re needed. These systems remove the need for manual stock checks and emergency orders, while also providing a full audit trail for compliance. By integrating VMS, businesses gain the visibility, control, and reliability needed for a truly smarter supply chain. Smarter supply goes beyond the procurement team and reflects a company-wide commitment. Involving health and safety managers, supervisors, and frontline workers in supplier evaluation can highlight practical concerns that might otherwise be missed. When employees see that their input influences procurement decisions, they are more likely to follow safety protocols.

Investing in supply systems that prioritise safety sends a clear message: this organisation values its people. This leads to higher morale, lower staff turnover, and improved productivity. Rubix plays a vital role as a partner in building this culture, offering on-site services and managed inventories that keep operations running without interruption. Our pan-European network and local technical teams provide both scale and proximity, maintaining continuous availability of essential products and giving businesses complete confidence in their supply chain. The safest workplaces are those where risks

are anticipated, not simply reacted to. Smarter supply enables businesses to take a proactive stance on workforce protection, from ensuring PPE meets the latest standards to guaranteeing that equipment arrives in full working order. By combining quality assurance, compliance diligence, and stock visibility, manufacturers can meet legal obligations, protect their people, and strengthen operational performance.
