ing production, the Big Bag Combination System integrates metal detection and case weighing. Measuring just 1.7 metres without its reject conveyor, it inspects heavier products weighing up to 25kg.


Standalone Stealth and Gravity Metal Detectors will also demonstrate flexi- ble inspection options for different production environments. “Industry is moving from fragmented machinery to cohesive equipment that prioritises productivity and supports operator-free running,” says Jodie Curry, Fortress Technology European Commercial Manager. All four systems can be equipped with Halo Automatic Testing to auto- matically validate metal detector performance, reducing downtime and food waste. ENGINEERING RELIABLE SEAWATER EXTRACTION FOR DISTILLERY COOLING


Our latest case study explores the supply of two self-priming seawater ex- traction pumps for a new whisky distillery. The pumps were required to draw seawater through a 65m suction pipe from 4.2m above sea level before trans- ferring it 1.4km inland, providing a reliable cooling water supply for the dis- tillery’s production process.


The Challenges of Seawater Extraction While highly effective, seawater extraction presents several engineering chal- lenges. Systems must be designed to cope with fluctuating tidal levels, abrasive sand and silt, marine growth, and the risk of debris entering the intake. Long suction distances and variable cooling demands add further complexity, requir- ing careful hydraulic design to maintain reliable priming and prevent issues such as cavitation.

Self-Priming Distillery Cooling Pumps The distillery required self-priming seawater extraction pumps capable of han- dling challenging operating conditions. Installed 4.2m above sea level, they draw seawater through a 65m suction pipe before pumping it 1.4km inland, while coping with fluctuating tidal levels. We supplied two XCP end-suction pumps, manufactured from duplex stain- less steel with a C5 marine coating for superior corrosion resistance. Each

pump delivers approximately 120m³ of seawater per hour. Designed for reliable, continuous operation, the pumps feature an oil-lubri- cated bearing housing and additional pump-head bearings to reduce motor strain, making them ideal for demanding marine and industrial applications. In addition, the long-coupled design maximises durability and makes mainte- nance easy, as the pump head can be accessed without taking out the motor.
