hen we ask ourselves what smart technology is, unsurprisingly,
it is difficult for us t o pinpoint an exact definition. Is it connectivity that makes electronics smart? AI? O r is it a combination of all these technological advances that generate a sense of increased control and connectivity? Smart electronics can be split into categories, depending on their t ype of operation and level of intelligence. Smart devices, for example, are electronics that can be programmed by a human user through a control interface. When y ou t hink of smart devices, think of products like modern slow cookers that you can programme t o cook items, with little effort. They are not connected to y our ISP, nor do they need t o be. Connected smart devices are considered a step above regular smart elect ronics. These types of devices can be connect ed wit h a Wi-Fi connect ion, through Bluetooth, or hardwired in with CAT 5 cables. Last ly, we have something t hat has snowballed ever since it burst onto the scene: IoT.
IoT devices are electronics that are
capable of handling everything previously covered in this article. However, they t ake things a step further: IoT devices possess the abilit y t o monitor, analyse and record information so that we are left wit h useable dat a, whether it is from the devices in homes, offices, cities or industrial warehouses. Automation analytics are a good case study for the integration of IoT in fact ories. Smart factory systems can greatly improve productivity by monitoring machinery ; automation robotics and smart devices can coordinate and act ively store
information on the cloud t o be analysed. Now that the different t ypes of smart devices have been dist inguished, one can start to understand how different smart electronics fit into different working environments, the challenges they face and the types of enclosures that help protect them.
Smart electronic devices do not work wit hout PCB assemblies and, in turn, will have components that require protection,

whet her it be from effect s such as water ingress for outdoor applications, or dust protection when situated in manufacturing plants or centralised IoT unit enclosures, such as the X series range, that can st ore and protect various other electronic assemblies as they control and analy se systems. As we can see, there are aspect s that need to be considered when designing smart devices for use in the consumer market – functionality and practicality above all. CamdenBoss’ latest enclosure design - the 1500 series universal smart enclosure - t akes these factors into account, with engineers and designers of smart electronics at the forefront of the operation. T he aim was to create an enclosure that could cat er for almost any operation, as well as offering the flexibility needed in t oday’s market. Manufactured in the UK, the 1500 series features a unique base shape, with two 45 degree angles cut from it. The shape allows the enclosure to be mounted at either 90 degrees or 45 degrees to a surface or a wall, or alt ernatively, directly int o the corner of a room. The body ty pe can be select ed, wit h either a vented or solid version available. This option of a vented housing lends itself t o smart applications that may find t hemselves in offices or retail areas, t o aut omate climate controls such as HVAC, and to sense for dangerous gases or smoke, to subsequently trigger fire alarms and activate water dispensers. By allowing smart devices t o control and monit or these scenarios, one can free themselves from certain burdens, or have more control over situations t hat arise. Manufactured in three colours - black, white and grey - the 1500 series can blend into a chosen surrounding easily. The 1500 series is demonstrative of a necessary move for the indust ry : manufacturers of enclosure solutions must keep up with t he world of smart electronics, and in t urn, provide versatile and resourceful enclosure designs.
