FEATURE EXHIBITION PREVIEW SHAPING THE RAIL INDUSTRY

This May, Railtex – the 14th international exhibition of railway equipment, systems and services – will be held at the NEC, Birmingham. Since its launch in 1993, the event has enjoyed strong support from organisations shaping the UK’s rail industry, offering visitors an insight into the latest developments and technologies within this growing sector

A

t this year’s Railtex, which will be taking place from 14-16 May at the NEC,

Birmingham, visitors will not only get the chance to see the latest products and technologies, but will have the chance to visit the Knowledge Hub, an educational theatre organised by the Railway Industry Association (RIA) which offers product updates, industry briefings and forum discussions. The Seminar Theatre, meanwhile, will provide technical seminars on such topics as: • Predictive maintenance strategies for continuous track monitoring • How can we digitise the journey to benefit the customer? • ZF EcoWorld2 – Efficiency with connectivity • Integrating systems for safety critical applications. The Rail Minister, Andrew Jones MP, has been confirmed as a keynote speaker, and is scheduled to speak on Wednesday 15 May at

More than 330 organisations, both UK and international suppliers, will be exhibiting at Railtex 2019

10.30am at the Future Focus Conference. Commenting on this, Natalia Charman, exhibition manager, said: “The rail industry is of huge importance to the UK’s economy and as such our exhibition has always received great backing from the Government and the Department for Transport. It will be important and beneficial for the attendees to hear from one of the rail industry’s most influential political figures, who is responsible for projects including Crossrail 2, Northern Powerhouse rail and the security of our railways.”

DIGITAL RAIL The term ‘Digital Rail’ is one which brings much discussion around the industry, as Network Rail seeks to create more capacity on an increasingly crowded network by modernising systems and adopting new technologies and innovations to lead the industry into the digital age. This will therefore be placed under the microscope at Railtex 2019. The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) will present the Digirail project amongst other research and development tools which will support organisations working in the industry’s supply chain. The BCRRE will be exhibiting alongside the Rail Alliance, with the two organisations ideally placed to provide leading support to SMEs in the

manufacturing and rolling stock sectors. A new Digital Rail Forum will also be held for

the first time, merging project management with supply chain to allow a collaborative review of the Digital Rail programme, through thought-leadership, insight, sense testing, qualitative engagement and cross-fertilisation to ensure its goals are met. Kirsten Whitehouse, exhibition manager,

said: “At Railtex 2019 we’ll be providing an array of presentations, demonstrations and discussions to help suppliers and railway managers understand and discover how digital technology is transforming the sector.”
