EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Retrofit: turning challenge into opportunity

R

etrofit is no longer just a technical option – it is a necessity for the built environment. With the majority of the UK’s building stock likely to still be in use by 2050, the pathway to Net Zero relies on how effectively we upgrade what already exists. Retrofit delivers multiple benefits: cutting carbon,

reducing energy costs, extending asset life, and improving health and comfort for occupants. It also provides a way to align with evolving legislation while unlocking long-term value for owners and operators. Yet the challenge is complex. From integrating digital technologies to navigating compliance, the industry needs clear strategies and shared knowledge to move retrofit forward at scale. That is why the Building Services Forum, returning to the Building Centre on 24 September, will focus on Retrofit – addressing the technologies, solutions and challenges

shaping future performance. You can find out all the details about what to expect from the forum in our supplement this month starting on page 26. To build on this conversation, this edition of BSEE focuses on Retrofit & Sustainable Buildings. The feature explores the practical tools and insights professionals need, including: Smart retrofit strategies: Data-focused solutions for Net Zero (Pg20); modernising through smart lighting (Pg22); Smart IoT applications (Pg23); and whether green materials really matter (Pg24). Together, the Forum and this month’s feature aim to help the sector turn retrofit from a challenge into a genuine opportunity to transform the built environment for the future.
