temperatures this summer, there has never been a clearer indication of the affect that climate change, and in particular global warming, is having on our environment. Some of this is likely to be naturally occurring, but CO2 emissions from various sources have no doubt contributed massively to what is now considered to be the most important issue the human race has ever faced. And with first the arctic and now huge swathes of the Amazon rainforest, often described as ‘the lungs of the world’, being ravaged by wildfires, the planet’s ability to deal with carbon dioxide is being drastically reduced and we are facing an

unprecedented environmental catastrophe on a huge scale. Governments around the world have finally woken up to the critical environmental issues which face us all, but many would say what they have planned is too little, too late. We have already reported on the UK government’s ambitious net-zero emissions target for 2050, which it is hoped will be followed by the other G7 countries, but even this doesn’t go far enough according to some experts. I spoke to one recently who believes that we have already left it too late and predicts even further catastrophic outcomes within the next 15 years unless we act much faster. The built environment

from energy used in buildings, according to the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC). Newly constructed buildings are more energy efficient, but with 80 per cent of the buildings we will be using in 2050 having already been built, a major priority has to be decarbonising our existing stock. The building services industry is at the forefront of tackling these key issues, with products and services that are already installed and making a difference. Whether it’s more efficient cooling of data centres, lower emission boilers, smart building controls, or more efficient and environmentally- friendly air conditioning solutions,

suppliers are finding increasingly clever and technologically advanced ways to help offset the impact caused by buildings. So as the built environment comes under increasing scrutiny, it’s reassuring to know that action is already being taken that will make a positive difference and you can learn more about many of these solutions in this issue.
