Hadley Group’s rollformed light gauge structural framing systems have recently been incorporated in the design and build of two prefabricated homes constructed by Totally Modular in its Cradley Heath factory and then delivered to a development 30 miles away


Hadley Group’s expertise in steel framing solutions meant that the manufacturer could supply a complete load bearing stand-alone structure for the two- and three-bedroom houses. The components of the fast track, housing system were manufactured at Hadley Group’s panelisation plant in Oldbury and then delivered to Totally Modular’s factory in Cradley Heath, West Midlands. Chris Holleron, group product manager – housing, says: “We started working with Totally Modular from the concept period in September 2018, through to the delivery in April, with the construction of the house being completed in June this year. Working closely with Totally Modular’s in-house design team, we produced a design, which encompassed a 100 per cent cold rolled solution, using our SFS platform. Once the design process was approved, we manufactured the panels, then delivering them to Totally Modular’s factory. Totally Modular then

continued to construct four separate modules, which would later come together on site, producing the finished homes.” As part of a modular housing pilot project between WM Housing Group (soon to become Citizen), Totally Modular and Coventry City Council, the new homes underline the unique understanding of cold rollform manufacturing, but the project also highlights the significant potential of modern methods of construction in tackling the nation’s housing shortage. The use of modular housing significantly enables faster build turnaround times and is ideal for when space is limited on site.

Wrexham Maelor is one of the busiest hospitals in North Wales, with a catchment area of over half a million people. Three million pounds was invested in the site to create a state-of-the-art modular building, delivered by MTX, comprising day case and endoscopy theatres, allowing the hospital to provide exceptional care.


With the NHS’ commitment to improving efficiency of services, the performance of products was crucial. The premium building service specification included the installation of 2,000lm of Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and 400m2


of


Kingspan Kooltherm Duct Insulation by thermal insulation contractor, Midland Premier Insulations Limited (MPI).


Scott McCaskie, director for MTX, discusses the project: “Given the environment, safety of patients is a priority. Kingspan products were selected for this project as, in addition to their thermal performance which would support the maintenance of comfortable temperatures, they


could also deliver excellent levels of indoor air quality with their fibre-free insulation cores.” Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation has a best-in- class Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold certificate, recognising it as an outstanding material according to the VOC Indoor Air Quality emissions standards. It also offers premium thermal performance with an aged thermal conductivity as low as 0.025W/m.K (at 10°C mean). It is one of the thinnest and most thermally efficient in common use within the UK construction industry today. This supported a fast-track installation whilst ensuring services operate effectively.


Kingspan Kooltherm Duct Insulation is externally faced with an aluminium vapour barrier foil. Its rigid nature ensures the specified thickness is maintained at the corners and can help to create a continuous and fully sealed vapour barrier. It can achieve thermal conductivities as low as 0.022W/m.K (at +10°C mean) and is suitable for rectangular, circular and flat oval indoor ductwork applications,


within an operating temperature range of –20°C to 80°C. The duct insulation is also manufactured under a BS EN ISO 14001: 2015 scheme and is produced at Kingspan Insulation’s Pembridge and Selby manufacturing facilities which are certified to BES 6001 ‘Excellent’.


The products’ cores are manufactured with a CFC/HCFC–free blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). All Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe and Duct Insulation has a BRE Green Guide Rating of A/A+.

Aer securing a long lease on an old factory that made mirrors and wooden frames, the Big House Theatre Company relocated to new headquarters in North London


The £300,000 renovation has transformed the building into a facility to support marginalised young people. The newly refurbished building includes performance and rehearsal spaces as well as counselling rooms and offices. Waterloo Air Products plc was one of the companies to support this inspirational charity. The Big House Theatre Company worked with MALA Building Services Engineers in London, to plan the refurbishment. Phase one, which totalled £127,000, is now complete and phase two is underway.


Simon Drake from MALA, a design- led practice based in London, described The Big House as an “altogether exceptional project”. He says: “Like other businesses, MALA did


not charge. We carried out a fair bit of work, including heating, plumbing and ventilation. It was rewarding to be involved and I’ve since been to a couple of the theatre shows, which were brilliant.”


Steve Skillett, specialist sales manager at Waterloo, worked with MALA to ensure products met with their specification and were delivered on time. He adds: “When MALA told us about The Big House, we were really happy to get involved. Being part of projects like The Big House is important to us.” To match with the building’s rustic style, both Waterloo’s double deflection grilles and eggcrate grilles were installed. The double deflection grilles are part of Waterloo’s adjustable blade range, the vanes


are individually adjustable to allow jet spread or deflection to be set within 45 degrees of the duct axis. Waterloo’s eggcrate grilles have been designed to satisfy all exhaust applications in a heating and ventilation system. Both types were supplied in an aluminium finish to add to the urban style, satisfying both engineering and architectural requirements. Arran Sewell, partnerships and communications coordinator at The Big House, adds: “We could not have completed the first phase without help from all the businesses who supported us. The charity means so much to the people it works with and we wanted to give them something special. We are about inspiring youngsters and in a


place like this, we can do it. We’re so proud of our new home and we’d like to thank everyone, including Waterloo, for their kindness.”
