The state-of-the-art, eco-friendly building, which has cost in excess of £20m, is the biggest single investment in the force’s history, will provide an improved working environment for the officers and staff, and enable them to deliver a better quality of service to the public.


The project places much emphasis on sustainability: it is targeted to achieve a BREEAM rating of very good, and required that 75 per cent of the spend would be within a 40 mile radius of the new site, in Clifton Road. Yet the building materials have to perform despite the site’s proximity to the exposed Fylde coast.


SES, Engineering Services chose Gilberts Blackpool to deliver the interfaces between the mechanical ventilation and the rooms below, as part of its package of MEP services won with principal contractor Willmott Dixon under the National Scape Framework.


A combination of Gilberts’ GPP high security grilles, drum louvres, DG four-way diffusers, GDS swirl


diffusers and GX air valves ensure the mechanical ventilation system delivers an appropriate flow of fresh air into the various areas of the three-storey 8,500m2 building, and removal of used air. The 60 no GPP grilles used to ventilate the 42-cell custody suite meet the enhanced Home Office specification for police use, and comprise 2mm thick stainless steel fascia to create a tough yet attractive unit with maximum taper resistance. To accommodate different suspended ceiling configurations throughout the remainder of the building, more than 250 DG four-way and 350 GDS swirl diffusers were utilised, to blend efficient performance with modern aesthetics. The diffusers are complimented in the washrooms by Gilberts’ GX air valves, and large general areas by Gilberts’ DL drum louvres. The stove- enamel finished air valves provide a compact means of extracting stale air and odours from toilets, washrooms and kitchens to achieve high air volume and velocity. The DL drum louvres rotate to


deliver a powerful stream of air with the capability to throw horizontally or vertically, thus accommodating any rise and fall in the airstream caused by temperature differentials between the supply air and room air.

Mechanical and electrical services provider, J S Wright, has secured a £3m contract to help convert a former Honda dealership site in west London into a high­quality residential


neighbourhood


The 129-year-old company, which has offices in Birmingham, Bristol and London, will fit out all 191 apartments at the development in Merrick Road, Southall for Galliard Homes and Network Homes.


The new five to 14-storey building will incorporate Galliard’s new Greenview Court scheme comprising 133 high-calibre properties ranging from studios to three-bed apartments and landscaped with rooftop and courtyard gardens. The building, close to Southall Crossrail station, will also include 58 affordable shared-ownership apartments that will be available from Network Homes.


J S Wright will equip each apartment with low pressure hot water heating, with individual radiators fed via a heat interface unit from a combined heat and power system in a central plantroom. The company will also install a boosted cold- water tank room and distribution network to enable all the apartments to receive instant domestic hot and cold-water services.


In addition, it will equip the scheme with a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system that will use the outgoing air from each apartment to heat incoming fresh air.


J S Wright will also supply and install


sanitaryware, an internal rainwater system and above ground drainage, along with building management system controls.


The installation of life safety systems including domestic sprinklers, smoke and environmental ventilation and dry risers will also form part of the brief. Work is scheduled to begin on site later this month (February) with completion scheduled for June 2020.


J S Wright is already in the process of installing the shell and core services for Galliard Homes’ 642- apartment scheme at Harbour Central in London’s Canary Wharf.

Audio engineers at hi­fi specialist, Sonority Design, have installed an ultra­low noise R­32­ based Toshiba air conditioning system to ensure the best possible listening environment for its customers


TCUK is a joint venture between Toshiba and Carrier in the United Kingdom, and is part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.


The Brierley Hill-based audio company concluded that Toshiba’s bi-flow RAS console split system was one of the quietest available, with a sound pressure range of just 31- 46dB(A), equivalent to a quiet bedroom in the dead-of-night and the hushed environment of a university study library.


Nigel Kuscher, managing director of Ref-Sol Limited, which installed the Toshiba system, says: “Our client specialises in very high-end hi-fi systems, which require the lowest possible ambient noise to preserve outstanding audio reproduction. They established that the Toshiba bi- flow system was one of the quietest available, and would deliver the comfortable environment needed for customers to audition equipment without detracting from the audio experience.”


He adds: “The other consideration was aesthetic design, in order to blend in with the up-market ambience of its retail outlet and listening studio. The discrete appearance and flowing curves of the Toshiba bi-flow console unit were a perfect match,” said Kuscher. The design of the Toshiba bi-flow system allows air discharge from the top and bottom of the unit, reducing turbulence and associated sound emissions while delivering excellent comfort conditions and energy efficiency.


It uses the latest digital hybrid inverter technology to precisely match output to demand, further reducing sound levels, and is equipped with a fine-filter system to ensure optimal indoor air quality.


The Sonority Design system delivers a total of 7.2kW of cooling and has an energy label rating of A++. Indoor units are Toshiba’s console model RAS-B18UFV-E1, and the outdoor unit is model RA3M27S3AV-E.

wiring system, plus a variety of the company’s GST connectivity products for a high specification, new build office project at 33 King William Street in the City of London


Located in the heart of London, the facility known as 33 Central is within easy reach of London Bridge, Monument and Bank stations in addition to being in close proximity to London leading landmarks and London’s Cycle Superhighway.


The building has been fitted out to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard and provides 225,000 sq ft of Grade A office space over 11 floors. The large flexible office floor plates and state-of-the-art facilities maximise natural light and outside space, while making the most of the spectacular surrounding views. The shell and core to Cat A & B fit out was completed by mechanical and electrical contractors Phoenix ME Limited, who specified Wieland’s Metalynx2


structured wiring system to supply power to the lighting and fan coil units across all floors of the project. Commenting on the installation, Matthew Dale, electrical engineer at Phoenix ME, states: “As well as being a robust, easy on the eye, and flexible product in terms of future expansion, the clear and concise construction drawings produced by Wieland made it an effortless installation.”

Wieland’s GST products were used for the final connection of luminaires to the LCM’s (lighting control modules) as well as providing all the interconnections between the light fittings. Wieland’s GST18 plug and play connector range is designed for lighting and building services installations where speed and precision are vital. Part of the gesis family, the system uses a mechanical coding arrangement so that male and female connectors can only be mated in one way and ensures that all contacts are connected simultaneously, with the earth contact in advance to provide a completely safe pluggable system. Wieland was also required to supply other items to various other suppliers involved in the 33 Central project where the products interfaced.
