INDUSTRY COMMENT

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is an intelligent 3D model-based process that gives architecture and construction professionals the insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure. It is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a construction project.

James Hahessy is a principle engineer with JLG Industries and has been a part of the company for over 7 years. In this role, he is responsible for researching future technology and focusing on creang innovave soluons for products and customers.

BIM is transforming the traditionally siloed architecture, engineering and construction disciplines to perform more efficiently with integrated workflows. BIM is key to extending the lifecycle and tracking maintenance of the structure by tapping into data not easily acquired otherwise.

Because of these benefits, various governments like Britain, Finland, and Singapore, mandate the use of BIM for public infrastructure projects, it will continue to evolve and become the common tool for successful joint completion of construction projects.

BIM in Construction Planning

The grand idea behind BIM is to achieve a single source of data that everyone can utilize, from the architects and engineers, to the owner and general contractor, as well as the various concrete, HVAC, electrical and other subcontractors working on the project. This one single source of data can replace the several sets of building plans each contractor often has to deal with on a job.

The major benefit of JLG BIM models is that it allows architects to anticipate challenges, manage risk and eliminate guesswork in the build environment. Relevant machine data can be accessed easily to make informed decisions. For rental companies, a major advantage of BIM is that, at a very early stage, the equipment required by their customers at a jobsite can be identified and reserved with prearranged transportation. This will allow uninterrupted workflow for the client with the right product delivered at the proper time to complete the job while also

maximizing usage of the rental equipment by eliminating unnecessary down time. Being able to see how your resources might flow from location to location, allows for efficient management of resources. Many projects require multiple crews starting in different areas, resulting in a wide range of set-ups. With BIM you can reduce the time and effort required to analyze multiple scenarios which is a critical component of improving workflows and productivity.

drawings and 3D models of these parts and assemblies, making it ideal for manufacturing. However, through incorporating BIM these models become more useful, not just to design engineers, but to entire teams working on a construction project. BIM models are designed for plasticity meaning that they can be adjusted and moved around. CAD file components lack this knowledge and fail to self-correct as

In fact, this is one of the main benefits of BIM in construction. The team can spot project issues before construction even starts. Building Information Modeling is a framework that applies CAD concepts to designing buildings in order to create models that include not only the physical but also the intrinsic properties of a building.

How BIM Works with Current Software’s

There are many technologies that can be used to support BIM such as Autodesk Revit, VICO Constructor, Bentley and Tekla Structures. One of the benefits of these software is that most programs communicate and work together. This can be helpful during the building process as architects’ files can be imported and used in BIM software allowing for greater collaboration.

BIM allows you to bring all your project data, including CAD models, into a single database. This gives all team members the ability to see the same models. When everyone is working on the same models, changes can be made faster and immediately visualized by the entire team.

An easy way to understand BIM is to think of it as a catalyst between CAD models and the rest of the construction process. BIM expands on current CAD models by bringing their designs into the construction environment.

CAD is especially useful for engineers working on projects that require multiple parts and components that fit into a larger assembly. It is used to create 2D

adjustments are made to the model. All equipment BIM model components are created parametrically. With this, users can change and adjust the height and horizontal reach of the platform, the swing angle, the platform rotation and the jib rotation. In addition, there is the ability to select the visibility control of the reach diagram.

Parametric modelling enables constraint features to be created, such as the height of a horizontal level, which then can be linked to the height of a specific set of walls, and parametrically adjusted with each other. This creates a geometry- tied dynamic database model.

Developing BIM Models with Engineers in Mind

Designed by engineers, JLG BIM allows for flexibility of possible changes to the project design or documentation process at any time without any hassle to the design team. This results in minimized coordination time and manual checking, thus enabling the design team to have more time solving critical problems.

Because changes can be made at a much greater speed, schedules, diagrams, drawings, estimates, value engineering, planning, and other forms of job communication are created dynamically while work is progressing. BIM allows for adaptation of the original model to various changes like site conditions, etc.

Using BIM allows for more work to be done by a smaller team. This means lower costs and fewer miscommunications. Less time and money are spent in process and administration because of higher

document quality and better construction planning. In addition, new models are updated with current information. All views are live and are always up to date. There is no need to manually update or regenerate a view.

As the technology becomes more prevalent and project teams see the benefits of BIM, the construction industry will realize the true value of these programs. BIM’s future is dependent on the entire construction industry changing the way in which it procures and delivers projects; there are many obstacles which need to be overcome to ensure that BIM is the chosen model for delivering future public and private projects. Open discussions across the entire project team are a prerequisite to ensuring that this happens.

JLG BIM Models

JLG’s BIM models are created internally instead of through a third party. Creating its own models ensures that users have the benefit of specifications that look and act as the real equipment would on the job. Additionally, it allows JLG to be in direct control of equipment revisions so that models are continuously up to date. This unique feature is a major benefit for users, without direct parity between model and machine, there is risk for customer. JLG’s models give customer certainty and reduce risk. JLG offers models of all products available, including regional standards (ANSI, CE). This means that all product characteristics – both physical and logical – of its real counterpart are available. They offer two types of ISO compliant 3D BIM files available, meeting the requirement of the BIM artist to support the further advancement of project outcomes in a real-world context. BIM models are currently offered in two types of ISO compliant files:.rfa and .ifc formats.

JLG offers all their models available in a data rich format, for free. Everyone in the construction value chain can now have access to this database of the highest quality, most reliable lift and access equipment.
