esearch from the Carbon Trust* suggests that poorly maintained air conditioning systems can waste up to
60% more energy than their wellmaintained counterparts. Tony Nielsen, Marketing Manager at Panasonic explains why now, is a perfect time to be proactive and offer remote maintenance and servicing to save energy, costs and ensure the effective performance of air conditioning systems.

Although we are all in challenging times, with the world in isolation
and most offices and many retail outlets closed, now is the time to offer remote maintenance and inspection reports for HVAC systems and ensure compliance with regulations for when everyone returns to ensure the building has fully functioning systems. Much of this work can now be carried out remotely via smart controls
for the maintenance of buildings. There are several smart control systems on the market that connect air conditioning units to the internet and then enable remote monitoring, control and maintenance of the system via an online platform, accessible from any web browser, tablet or smartphone. Remote maintenance and monitoring can mean huge advantages for
installers offering maintenance contracts to their customers. If installers can monitor the performance of air conditioning units, they can see that a unit is not performing as it should be. With a truly smart air conditioning system, such as Panasonic’s AC Smart Cloud, installers may be able to diagnose the issue through the web portal in addition to some cases being solved remotely. Even though remote maintenance is not possible in all cases, being able to see what the exact issue is enables installers to prioritise maintenance obligations so that they do

amongst the North Yorkshire company’s most popular products; and were specified by BHP due to their exceptional corrosion resistant properties, which were seen as vital due to the project’s proximity to the sea and the high salt content of the air around the plant. Kelly Brown, Ellis’ export sales
manager, said: “Latin America is noted for being one of the hardest export markets to break into, but the success we’re enjoying there pays testament to our tried and tested method of fully researching a new market before entering it.” “Unlike other regions we took
the decision early on to appoint a locally based business development manager; Gabriela CastroFontoura; who has built up a strong network of distributors from her base in Uruguay, and is now enjoying a string of significant specifications.”

not have to spend time travelling to a site and attending to an issue that did not necessarily require urgent attention. This remote monitoring and maintenance can be particularly useful in
applications where a robust, stable air conditioning system is critical to the business, such as data centres and server rooms, hospitals and supermarkets. Installers can monitor the performance level of air conditioning units and receive alerts when performance drops below a certain level. This project can then be prioritised, and the installer can ensure that crucially important air conditioning systems remain operational and that business activities are not interrupted.

S New Ostro Air Curtains
Available in 3 versions – W hydronic, E Electric and C Ambient, Ostro air curtains protect against heat loss in rooms by directing a warm air stream across doorways preventing cold air from entering the heated space. In summer, the air curtains can be used as cooling devices to prevent the entry of hot air and pollutants from the outside. With heat outputs of up to 40kW for the hydronic version and up to

providing products that are well adapted to the local market and developing fully tested, tailored solutions to specifically suit UK and Ireland customers. The need for a test furnace had become more urgent following the
Grenfell Tower disaster, which led to unprecedented demand for certification testing and put huge strain on existing capacity across the sector. This had the knockon effect of making it difficult for manufacturers to find facilities able to carry out the crucial preliminary tests needed to help develop new products.
Specifications With that in mind, Smoke and Fire Director Andrew Collard said “we feel it now is the time for the company to have its own fire test furnace in house; designed to our specifications. This will help us keep up with plans to serve our customers with improved installation methods, well adapted for our local needs.” The furnace at Whitstable will allow Actionair to speed up development
testing in line with the appropriate industry technical standards. It will also make it possible to quickly develop, test and refine different installation methods to make life easier for its customers on site. “The industry has been held back by lack of availability of test
facilities for too long. This has lengthened lead times and delayed innovation in this vital market,” said Swegon UK&I Managing Director Robin Vollert.

under the spotlight for some time. Part of this has been to review the legislation in terms of the building height limit, where sprinklers will be required to be fitted in England and Wales, has now reached its conclusion. This announcement has clarified the position that now states that any
new high rise apartments of 11m and above, will need to be fitted with suitable sprinkler fire protection. This is a big decrease from the previous 30m limit and is even lower than had been mooted within the industry. Grundfos Pumps who have been a key supplier to the fire industry for
many years and have the capacity to design, test and build to an extensive list of approvals a wide variety of fire protection equipment at their production facility in Sunderland, have welcomed this news. There is no doubt that these regulations, alongside other changes to
various other aspects, such as cladding, will undoubtedly save lives. Although these changes have also been widely welcomed by the fire industry bodies, there is an awareness that there needs to be a real concerted effort made, in order to ensure there is sufficient skilled labour available to meet this new demand. They are now actively working towards this goal.
