T


he Building Services Forum, held on June 6 at the Building Centre in London, was a great opportunity for the industry to get to grips with all the issues which will play a role in the drive to Net Zero. Acknowledging that 80 per cent of the buildings that exist today will still be in use by the 2050 Net Zero deadline, the event sought to highlight all the challenges and solutions linked to the topic of the day. The concept of retrofit was the central theme of the day in a host of excellent seminar presentations. It was also the topic of debate in an excellent panel discussion, hosted by Ewen Rose, which concluded that everyone of us needs to pick up the mantle and be a ‘superhero’ if we are to meet our Net Zero goals. We were lucky enough to welcome BCIA president Stacey Lucas, who addressed the critical part building services must play in the decarbonisation challenge,


the hurdles that need to be overcome, the crucial role of controls, and where retrofit fits in.


She was in good company with the speaker line up fom Kingspan, Breathing Buildings, Cistermiser, BESA, Mitsubishi, Polypipe Building Services, Altecnic and Rinnai. Speakers covered a wide variety of subjects offering a new understanding of Net Zero guidance and regulation, whole life carbon, low carbon heating, hybrid ventilation systems, sustainable water-saving solutions as well as all the policy stumbling blocks the industry is currently facing.
