Beacon Disabled Refuge range - a comprehensive solution
E
SP’s comprehensive Beacon disabled refuge range is being increasingly sought after by contractors working on larger, specification type projects. Meeting the requirements of BS 9999:2017 and Building Regulations Approved Document B,
the Beacon range comprises a variety of products that are specifically designed to assist emergency evacuation situations in a wide range of buildings and venues – with the aim of assisting people with limited mobility to safely exit the building. The Beacon ‘Master Stations’ are the central point of the disabled refuge system, which combines
Fire Telephone Handsets, Disabled Refuge Outstations and Emergency Alarms to form one fully integrated system. Master Station - there are two Beacon Master Station options available – a push button version
with 2-8 lines, and a touchscreen version with capacity for up to 512 lines to support a wide range of communication devices. During an emergency the Master Station identifies the location of the Outstation that has been activated, with clear duplex audio to assist an evacuation process. Disabled Refuge Outstations – known as ‘Type B’ Outstations, these provide a fixed point of communication in a building for users who require evacuation or assistance. Situated in refuge areas usually found in protected stairwells, the Outstation provides duplex audio to the Master Station, which is located in the building’s control room, or at the access points for the fire service. Fire Telephone Handsets - known as ‘Type A’ Outstations, these are for use by the fire and rescue service during an evacuation, allowing the officer at the fire control centre to communicate with other officers to control the evacuation. The ‘Type A’ Outstation activates a call to the Master Station to assist the fire and rescue service. Assist Call Range - comprises a number of expandable 3-part Assist Call Kits and accessory products which interface with the Master Station, identifying the location of the alarm upon activation. These include a Toilet Kit, as well as a Bedroom Kit suitable for hotels, residential and student accommodation. IP-rated modules are also available as part of the Assist Call accessories range, suitable for wet rooms and for areas of high moisture and humidity. The options include Call Button, Call Plate and Cancel Plate. ESP’s Beacon disabled refuge and assistance alarm range is supported by a dedicated, UK-based technical team, and will offer contractors and specifiers access to a free design service, compliant with the latest BS5839-9:2021 regulations. A brochure covering the whole of the Beacon range, along with examples of how the components of the system integrate is available to download from the ESP website and from the Scolmore Group app.

Lochinvar takes care of heating and hot water at Lavender Fields
H
eating, hot water and renewable specialist Lochinvar has provided a complete heating and hot water system powered by four air source heat pumps for a
new luxury 72-bedroom care home set in rolling Yorkshire countryside. The home is the latest addition to the retirement community at Lavender Fields Care Village, which also includes 24 privately-owned bungalows near the picturesque village of Barmby Moor. It is three miles from the famous market town of Pocklington in the spectacular East Riding, and the 72 luxury bedrooms enjoy views over the countryside and the community’s landscaped gardens. Lochinvar was specified to provide a fully integrated heating and hot water package including energy saving heat pumps, thermal store, two storage vessels and ancillaries. The system, which was designed and installed by Leeds-based mechanical services contractor Sayes,
and overseen by the main contractor Firecrest Construction, is managed by a priority control system that keeps energy use low while ensuring the right balance between hot water production and the home’s underfloor heating system. The heat pumps were chosen from Lochinvar’s Amicus HT air-to-water heat pump range which can provide hot water at up to 63degC giving a highly efficient low carbon method of supplying domestic hot water in both existing and new build properties.
Prioritise The system at Lavender Fields uses a three-port priority demand function which allows the system to prioritise hot water, in line with the specific demands of a care home, and then switch to heating mode when the hot water demand has been met. This highly energy efficient approach is further boosted by using a thermal store that helps to smooth
out the peak loads and reduces the number of times the compressor starts and stops – so helping to prolong operational life and improve reliability. The Lochinvar system also includes cascade control which allows the system to closely manage
the operating patterns of the four heat pumps to match demand. This is very energy efficient and is, therefore, in tune with the care village’s wider ambition of being a “fully sustainable community”. The Lochinvar system was chosen because, to be successful, the project needed a fully integrated solution with all the separate components working in close co-ordination. The design team praised the technical and after-sales support provided by the manufacturer, particularly mentioning the high levels of communication during the specification and installation processes. Lochinvar’s Amicus HT range comprises 34 separate models with heating capacities up to 219kW.
They can operate in ambient temperatures as low as -20˚C in heating mode and can also achieve a coefficient of performance (COP) above four.

PODCAST: HOW TO SELECT & SIZE A COMMERCIAL HUMIDIFIER
C
ondair has released a new podcast for HVAC professionals on how to select and size a commercial humidifier. In a 15-minute interview with BusinessNet Explorer, Dave Marshall- George, Sales Director at Condair, explains what should be considered when setting out on a
humidifier project. Dave comments, “This podcast will be really helpful for any building services consultant, contractor
or FM who needs to understand more about humidification of a commercial premises. Humidifiers are essential in many applications, but projects of this type don’t come along very often. So it can be difficult for HVAC engineers to get the experience needed to successfully design a humidification system. In this podcast, I describe the main elements that determine whether a humidifier should be used in an AHU or directly in a room, which type of humidifier fits what type of application and how to correctly size a unit for an area.” This latest Condair podcast is available at
www.condair.co.uk/podcast as well as on Spotify, SoundCloud
and YouTube. Also, available on this Condair webpage is Condair’s back catalogue of podcasts. The series of bite-sized, informative audio episodes cover topics like how to use humidifiers for evaporative cooling in AHUs, how to combat static with humidity, humidity’s impact on health and how to use dehumidifiers to reduce ice in commercial freezers. The Condair Group is the world’s leading specialist in humidity control and evaporative cooling,
with energy efficient, hygienic and innovative technologies for commercial, industrial and heritage applications.
