Innovative strategies
are being adopted to minimise water consumption in data centre HVAC systems. Air-side economisers leverage outside air for cooling during favourable weather conditions, reducing reliance on water- intensive cooling systems. Water recycling
and re-use techniques, such as grey water systems, capture and treat non-potable water from sources like rainwater or condensate. This captured water can be used in cooling towers. Advanced cooling system controls, which allow for precise monitoring and management of cooling operations, optimise the process and reduce unnecessary water usage.
In certain climates with cooler climates or where water availability is a significant concern, data centres are adopting dry cooling systems. These rely on air rather than water for heat dissipation.
Refrigerant Solutions
As part of the decarbonisation process, data centre HVAC systems are looking to use lower GWP refrigerants. With the emergence of F-gas regulations in 2020, Carrier responded to these changes with screw chillers operating on R-1234ze refrigerant. Carrier uses a particular blend of R-1234ze, an HFO refrigerant with a very low GWP of less than one, providing an environmentally sustainable solution and compliance with regulations.
