High performance doorsets perfect choice for local community-centric scheme
Driven by a desire to create strong communities and durable homes, the Sky House Co., in South Yorkshire, partnered with doorset manufacturer JELD-WEN to provide high performance, sustainability-backed devices for its Waverley Central project in Rotherham
B
ased in Sheffield, the timber doorset manufacturer was chosen to supply 988 doorsets for the project, which will see a former colliery transformed into a new residential neighbourhood
creating 96 new homes. Backed by robust testing, the doorsets supported the performance requirements for the homes – including providing a number of fire doors – as well as being backed by a sustainability-led approach that supported the wider aims of the scheme. Led by Sky House Co., which creates homes that aim to make a positive community impact in line with its commitment to corporate social responsibility – the project has an emphasis on providing a walkable community with strong neighbourhood connections. This included 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom, and 4-bedroom houses, with a focus on high density living and shared gardens to support an urban centre. Built with sustainability, durability and innovation in mind, the project required both fire and non-fire doors to be fitted to meet the requirements of the design.
Rebecca Prince, Head of Brand at Sky House Co., said: “While the emphasis is on creating
a positive, connected community at Waverly Central, it is important that the homes are built to last and meet the highest standards in design and functionality. “Doors are an integral part of any home,
providing security, safety and playing a key part in the design. With the housing being focused on three-story buildings to maximise the space and capture that essence of a close community, it was vital that fire doors were fitted to protect a means of escape in the event of a fire breaking out.
“JELD-WEN was able to offer expert technical support and provide third party certification
to demonstrate the fire performance of its doors – and provide an aesthetic solution to complement the homes.” To support this the manufacturer supplied the
project with standard doorsets and FD30 fire rated doorsets in a moulded ladder design with Treviri handles, ensuring an aligned aesthetic throughout the homes. The FD30 fire rated doorsets are fitted with intumescent strips that swell to create a fire- resistant seal in the event of a fire to ensure safe passage within a 30-miniute time period. The fire doorsets are also optimised to be fitted with a data pin that allows testing certification and data, including installation information, to be stored in the door and accessed through its lifetime in line with the requirements of the golden thread. These also allow any maintenance to be flagged up to ensure the doors remain compliant with regulations.
With the Waverly Central project being sustainability-led, the doorset specialist was in a position to support that continuity thorough the supply chain. In addition to having set clear Net Zero goals for 2050, the company has adopted the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard to ensure continual improvement of its environmental performance. In addition, all its timber is sourced in compliance with the EU Timber Regulations (EUTR) and JELD-WEN ensures responsible and ethical sourcing of its timber through Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification. Daniel Herbert, area sales manager at JELD- WEN, explained: “The large-scale and unique vision for the Waverley project led the Sky House Co. team to seek our support in specifying the right doors to support both the design and the building regulations.
“JELD-WEN prides itself on upholding the highest, third-party certified, testing standards so we were able to provide Sky House Co. with the confidence it was choosing the best doorset products to support its vision of a better community-based way of living. “We were able to meet the demands of the project with the same finish, providing a uniformed aesthetic, and ensuring safety and comfort were prioritised. With the project so near to our base here in Sheffield we were able to work closely with the team – and have been able to enjoy seeing the project get underway.” Rebecca added: “JELD-WEN has a long- standing reputation as a UK manufacturer of high-quality timber doorsets and the fact that the company could provide both standard doorsets, as well as meet the fire door requirements, allowed us to source all our interior doorsets from one supplier.
