EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS New backing for hydrogen as fuel source
T
he support for hydrogen-ready appliances took an important step forward this month when the government announced new backing for nuclear
and hydrogen technologies.
Set to become a super-fuel of the future, a statement said ...”accelerating the use of hydrogen will be key to the UK’s greener energy future, alongside the work to deploy renewables and nuclear to strengthen the UK’s energy security”. The government plans to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen from bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) - a ‘negative emission’ technology that can permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
Importantly for the heating and building services sectors, a consultation is underway on a proposal to make all new domestic-scale gas boilers sold from
2026 capable of being powered by hydrogen. This is to prepare for potential transition to the use of the low- carbon fuel for heating in the future. Hydrogen-ready boilers run on natural gas but at a point in the future when the network can be safely switched to hydrogen, they can be converted. Not surprisingly, those who champion the future
of hydrogen as a future fuel source, have warmly welcomed the announcements as a vitally important step towards decarbonising UK homes. Decarbonising heat is one of the biggest challenges for heating engineers, not only for UK homes but also for commercial businesses. (See pg 14) The latest government backing endorses the important role the fuel is expected to play in the UK’s drive to energy security.
