Smith’s SMART Control provides remote control and monitoring of the heating for a charity shop and café
Essex into a shop, café and donations centre. The area where the shop and café were to be located was made up of full height glazing meaning providing efficient and effective heating would be a challenge. The charity wanted to be able to control the heating remotely as well as managing and monitoring local controls to ensure effective heating levels. Finally, as the charity wanted to maximise what wall space they did have for merchandising in the shop, and for tables in the café.
S
mith’s was contacted by the heating contractor refurbishing a former car showroom for St Helena Hospice in north
The solution developed by Smith’s and the
contractor was to install Caspian Skyline CT60 EC fan convectors in the existing ceiling grid. This maximised the wall space as stipulated by the charity and used the existing heat generator to provide the Low Temperature Hot Water for the Caspian fan convectors. To fulfil the requirement in the project brief
of being able to fully control the heating the Caspian Skylines were fitted with SMART Controls with the shop and café being set up as separate heating zones using SMART thermostats. The system incorporated wireless relays to control the zone valves.
To provide heating in the Donation and
Sorting Area a Smith’s Ecovector HL 4000 fitted with a wireless relay to enable/disable the heater was installed. To provide temperature monitoring and remotecontrol App controlled thermostats were also installed. This also provides tamperproof operation.

solution to unlocking doors when combined with a door access system. Rather than relying on access cards, lanyards and buttons, users can exit a building simply by waving their hand over the touchless sensors. As measures continue to be taken to limit the

spread of the virus, demand is on the increase for products which are hands free and ESP’s new infra red contactless exit button is a relatively low cost option that can be utilised for new or retro fit installations. When in standby mode, the ring of LED lights
glows blue to draw attention to the door release button, and switches to green as soon as a hand is presented within the defined range, indicating that the relay has switched, and the door release has been engaged.
It features an adjustable infrared
proximity sensor (110cm). The contactless exit button can be used in
conjunction with ESP’s entire Aperta door access range including video door entry, audio, multiway, WiFi and the EZ Tag 3 door entry products.

ast year Grundfos launched an extended guarantee scheme in the UK. This initiative delivers a 5 year manufacturer’s guarantee on their popular ranges of
intelligent MAGNA3, TPE3, NBE and NKE pump models purchased after 01/05/20, at no extra charge. It has already proved to be a very popular addition. The scheme is straightforward, to take full advantage
of this great offer, which is on top of the many benefits you already have access to by being a Grundfos customer, simply need to register your pump. You can do this at the point of commissioning, by completing and submitting a GRUNDFOS GO report. On acceptance you will receive an email and your 5 year guarantee period will commence with immediate effect it is that simple. Offering security directly from commissioning, this guarantee can be accessed via a
simple online registration process. Additionally it offers greater financial security, as well as the benefit of clear documentation and of course the acknowledged guarantee period. With the pump product lineup under constant review, visit the website to learn more and to get the most uptodate information on this great addition.

oshiba, a global leader in highefficiency, highperformance HVAC systems for domestic and commercial buildings, has unveiled the seventh generation of its industryleading VRF
(Variable Refrigerant Flow) system for centralised cooling and heating in commercial buildings. Completely redesigned from the ground up, Toshiba’s innovative
SMMSu headlines with its topclass efficiency, adaptability and connectivity, as well as its ease of installation and yearround comfort control. Regardless of the premises – office building, hotel, shop, restaurant, bar, hospital or factory – the Toshiba SMMSu provides a host of benefits to consultants, installers, owners and users. Among several new technologies is Toshiba’s exclusive triple rotary compressor for greater efficiency and capacity, a space efficient chassis and a highcapability communications protocol. Superior energy efficiency is in Toshiba’s DNA, and the Euroventcertified SMMSu is no different. Housed in an ultra compact chassis, energy consumption is minimised through the combination of proprietary triple rotary compressor and superefficient heat exchanger. These technologies position the SMMSu as a sectorleading VRF in seasonal efficiency that helps building owners and tenants reduce their energy bills. Notably, efficiency is also assured in partload conditions, which prevail 90% of the time in typical commercial settings.

time indoors, which is why we need a sound indoor climate for our health, wellbeing, and happiness. Our business models, services,
products, and systems are all designed to provide you with the right solution for each individual project. With years of experience, we have a unique knowledge of the entire construction process. Swegon delivers the best
indoor climate. Together with AHU’s in the GOLD Series, Swegon’s chillers, heat pumps and multifunctional units fulfil the needs for cooling and heating in the most effective way. SMART Link+ transforms these two excellences into a unique optimised system in our strive to deliver the best indoor climate with minimum energy consumption. The SMART Link+ function is designed to be used for
rom independent products to a smartly linked system. Improve
All SMART Link+ functions for cooling/heating units and access for external BMS for integration are available through the air handling units’ controllers. Several hydronic loops can be
controlled and optimised from each air handling unit, for example loops for heating and cooling for central heating, chilled beams or fan coils. SMART Link+ also handles external heating and cooling system e.g. district heating and geothermal cooling. This new version of SMART Link
optimized control of heating and/or cooling production on one or more GOLD air handling units together with one or more cooling and/or heating producers. A large number of different types of Swegon products including water chillers, heat pumps and multifunction machines with liquidborne media can be used. All controls in GOLD for liquidborne heating and cooling can be freely combined and used in the function.
Linking the indoor climate
requirements to an optimised water production and distribution has never been easier. SMART Link+ ensures that the temperature difference is as small as possible between demanded and supplied temperature, which minimises the energy required to heat or cool. As the SMART Link+ is an
embedded standard option on Swegon control platforms, it reduces onsite installation time and costs, as all that’s needed is to connect all units to a network.

connects Swegon chillers and heatpumps with GOLD units and optimises the production of cooling and heating energy. Communication is via Modbus/TCP and all functionality is included in the software installed in the controllers of the individual products so no additional control equipment is needed. SMART Link+ saves time on site, saves energy and offers a user friendly interface.

building services, as the industry found a depth of resilience and innovation that might never have been realised otherwise. Grundfos Pumps are proud to have played their part, by delivering ‘business as usual’, as well as though specifying, supplying and fitting pump solutions in a record time, to several Florence Nightingale projects and laboratory test centres. Additionally they have streamlined their offering and accelerated their endtoend processes that now allows them to maximise the delivery of their offsite build solutions that are engineered and delivered from their specialist Grundfos manufacturing plant in Sunderland. These solutions will be playing an increasingly key role. in an increasing number of building services projects, moving forward. Recent official announcements will also greatly benefit the industry,

as well as the wider community. An example being the peace of mind and positive impact of changes to fire regulations for new highrise buildings in England and Wales. Then there is the £36bn fund the Government has pledged to improve the nation’s infrastructure, that will encourage the upgrading of plant equipment to enhance and promote energy improvements. Grundfos are looking forward to continuing to play their supporting
role in any new or refurbishment pump solutions requirements in 2021.
