Plans for student accommodation scheme in Coventry approved
B
IRMINGHAM, 23 October 2024 – Sama Investment Group, a Birmingham-
based developer and investor, has seen plans for 130 student beds at the edge of Coventry city centre approved by councillors. The development, known as Charter House, will see an industrial site on Charterhouse Road transformed to deliver a new student accommodation scheme across four and six storey buildings. This is accompanied by a dynamic range of amenities including study areas, lounges, and a gym. Outdoor courtyard space and garden areas overlooking Sherbourne River are also included
in the proposals, with the aim of maximising the student experience and wellbeing, within a natural environment. Charter House has been designed with sustainability at its heart, incorporating renewable energy
technologies throughout the scheme. As a result, the project is targeting an ‘Excellent’ rating by BREEAM, the internationally recognised certification which assesses a building’s specification, design, construction and use for its impact on the environment. The site had been identified as a strategic location to benefit from student-led regeneration and
investment. Located just a five-minute walk away from Coventry University campus, the plans will contribute meaningfully to the growing demand for high-quality student accommodation in the city. Bilal Ahmed, Executive Chairman & Founder at Sama Investments, said: “We’re delighted to be granted planning approval for Charter House. As a brownfield site close to Coventry University, this is a fantastic opportunity to deliver a high-quality student accommodation scheme which will add real value to the city, supporting our growing educational institutions and meeting the increasing demand for student beds. “Importantly, it will also help unlock existing family housing elsewhere in the city rather than
force students to rely on HMOs and the private rented sector. “Part of a wider transition within the area, these proposals are highly sustainable and seek
to make best use of the site for the benefit of the whole community – driving local growth and creating jobs. We look forward to engaging with interested groups who can take this exciting opportunity forward at the site.”

NEW TYCO ESFR-25 DRY-TYPE SPRINKLER STREAMLINES COLD STORAGE FIRE PROTECTION
M
ILWAUKEE, WI., Sept. 26, 2024 — Johnson Controls, the global leader for smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, today launches the new Tyco® ESFR-25 Dry-Type Pendent Sprinkler offering efficient, FM Approved fire protection for commercial refrigerated and frozen storage
areas. The dry-type sprinkler is used in applications where the water is supplied from a wet system in an adjacent conditioned space. It is designed for dependable operation in cold storage areas up to 50 feet (15.2 meters) in height with temperatures as low as minus 60 F (minus 51 C). The ceiling-only, lower-pressure sprinkler provides flexibility and efficiency by reducing the need for a fire pump and eliminating the need for in-rack sprinklers when protecting high-piled storage within these box-in-box applications. While an effective solution, traditional in-rack sprinkler systems can be complex and expensive. Obstructions and tight clearances can make installation difficult while daily operations such as shelving and retrieving products can damage in-rack sprinklers, resulting in potential downtime. Innovative ceiling-only cold storage protection, like the Tyco ESFR-25 Dry-Type Sprinkler, operate without the need for in-rack sprinklers for an overall simpler and more affordable solution. And as box- in-box freezer storage facilities become taller to accommodate more product, reliable performance at ceiling heights of up to 50 feet offers greater peace of mind. This new Tyco cold storage sprinkler is also designed to operate at lower-end head pressures, reducing or even eliminating the need for a fire pump. “By combining a 25.2 K-factor sprinkler with a dry-pipe design, we’ve introduced a tested and proven
fire suppression solution for high-piled storage in commercial coolers and freezers,” said Beth Bjorlo, senior director, Fire Suppression Products at Johnson Controls. “Backed by a history of trusted Tyco performance, this cold storage sprinkler innovation helps round out our industry-leading, full-building portfolio of fire suppression solutions.” With the flexibility to meet a wide range of cold storage applications, the ESFR-25 sprinkler is the only
early suppression, fast response dry-type sprinkler with a nominal K-factor of 25.2 that comes in both threaded connections (1-1/4- inch NPT or ISO 7-1) and grooved 2-inch connections. It’s also available with:
• •
Ordinary (165 F/74 C) and intermediate (212 F/100 C) temperature ratings
23-, 30- and 36-inch barrel lengths
• Included insulating seal assembly kit to help minimize the condensation and ice buildup

Elta Invests Over £650k in New Machinery as it Eyes Growth in Production
C
ontinuing its expansion and growth strategy, Elta has invested in two new machines to streamline and improve its manufacturing
capabilities. This comes on the back of the air movement specialist’s 50th anniversary. These two machines include a new Trumpf TruPunch 1000 Punch Press at Elta’s Kingswinford, West Midlands headquarters, and a new 6kW Auto Loading Laser at its Fareham base. The installation comes with new electrics, flooring, and a mezzanine platform, with the total expenditure being over £650,000. The investment allows Elta to increase its manufacturing efficiency and capacity on its ventilation solutions at both sites. Specifically, the laser’s automated bed feature enhances efficiency across the business as it requires less in-person supervision, freeing team members up to focus on other projects, increasing factory capacity. With its clean-cut edges, the laser not only improved the quality of the end product but also boosts efficiency by eliminating the need for manual finishing and contributes to improved safety by producing smoother, more consistent edges. Damian Buxton, CEO at Elta UK, said: “We have chosen to make these investments as we see the
value and importance of being a UK manufacturer. They enhance our capabilities for the benefit of both our customers and employees, and ensure we keep moving forward to challenge the rest of the industry. Our new machines were both installed in what is our 50th year anniversary, helping to mark our intentions with growth and expansion.” The investment in machinery follows on from several other major developments in Elta’s 50th year milestone, heralded under its new strapline of ‘Air Movement, Air Quality’. This includes rebranding its UK and Ireland businesses, unifying them under the ‘Elta’ name earlier this year. Elta’s parent company, Elta Group, has also just announced the acquisition of Air Movement Supplies (AMS), a leading manufacturer and supplier of ventilation equipment in Ireland. AMS joined Elta Group in August 2024 to significantly expand Elta’s distribution network and strengthen its product range, production capabilities and allowing it to better serve customers in the Emerald Isle. In addition, Acoustica was recently rebranded to Elta, and is now Elta’s specialist noise control division, designed to help offer guidance and support in solving complex noise issues originating from ventilation equipment. Mark Rickard, CEO of Elta Group, added: “This new investment will significantly boost our operating capacity, enabling us to meet customer’s needs much more efficiently. Along with our rebrand, these are great steps in cementing our position in the HVAC industry and highlights our intentions beyond our 50th year anniversary. It shows what Elta is about – reshaping the world’s understanding of air quality and contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future.”

Daikin Applied launches glycol-free chiller option
D
aikin Applied UK has followed up last year’s launch of its TZ D air cooled
chillers with the launch of a glycol free option.
Going glycol free can improve
heat transfer efficiency and, therefore, performance while also reducing running costs. While glycol is useful in applications where freezing is a concern, it can be an environmental or health hazard due to its toxicity and can degrade over time which causes reliability problems. Choosing a glycol-free option can also be a regulatory requirement in some regions and for sensitive environments like food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or data centres. So, Daikin has developed a “closed loop” system that delivers an efficient solution for applications where avoiding the use of glycol is preferred. It is the latest addition to the company’s TZ D air-cooled free cooling chiller range which employs the latest technology to deliver top performance across a wide range of capacities from 180 to 2150 kW. These free-cooling products are a popular solution for comfort, process and critical cooling applications where the outdoor ambient conditions are between –20°C up to +55°C and supply water temperature is –12°C up to +30°C.
Free cooling The new EWFH/S/D-TZ D models are designed with a fully integrated free cooling system and the controls enable free cooling operation when the outdoor air temperature is low enough to cool the fluid returning from the system to the chiller. The range is available with a choice of three refrigerants: R-1234ze, R-513A and R-134a and in four efficiency levels based around its single screw compressor design. The chiller also benefits from the use of one or two independent refrigerant circuits and each compressor is equipped with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) which offers greater reliability whatever the outside conditions and adjusts the operating patterns to closely match demand. The units have a considerably smaller footprint than similar products on the UK market and this helps with siting and installation as well as being a helpful space saving solution for end users.
