BITZER Introduces Super-lightweight Scroll Compressor for Air Conditioning on the Move

B

ITZER’s new SPEEDLITE ELV52 scroll compressor is designed to meet the

challenging requirements of air conditioning for electric buses and trains. Air conditioning systems for modern public transport have to meet a unique set of demands. Space and weight constraints, rapidly changing conditions and working life have a direct impact on operators’ investment and running costs, as well as future compatibility. Compressors must also be quiet with low vibration, and be very reliable due to the high cost of downtime. BITZER’s new SPEEDLITE ELV52 compressor is designed to address these specific requirements for air conditioning electric buses and trains, to ensure a stable and comfortable environment for passengers. The compact aluminium scroll compressor is around 50 per cent lighter than conventional units, and designed to respond rapidly to the fluctuating heating and cooling demands of transport applications. It is compatible with a wide range of refrigerants, including low-GWP fluids and propane (R-290), making it future-proof in relation to F-gas regulations and extending working life. The unit has a wide operating range, enabling it to cater for swings in ambient temperature due to

high solar gain and rapid cooling as a result of travel through tunnels. Compressor output is managed by a separate speed controller that adjusts cooling capacity to current cooling and heating load, ensuring steady temperature control inside the vehicle at all times. This results in higher efficiency, not only for the SPEEDLITE ELV52 but the entire system. Importantly, unlike some other scroll compressors, SPEEDLITE ELV52 can be used as part of a heat pump-based system to heat and cool vehicles. Thanks to its integrated economiser, the compressor offers excellent performance even in low ambient temperatures, further reducing operating costs and supporting decarbonisation efforts.

Control Panel In addition, and to save installation time and space, the pre-plumbed 200-cylinder assembly comes fitted with a fully wired control panel. The only requirements are connections to the outside heat pump using a two-core cable and a 13A power supply. The Smartech thermostat is then wirelessly connected for temperature and time user settings with the Wi-Fi user app option. An optional further heating zone can be served directly from the cylinder with the second zone kit valve and Smartech expansion kit.

s the new Future Standard comes into force and the UK works towards achieving net-zero ambitions by 2050, the domestic heating sector is set to go through a revolution over the coming years. With UK homeowners seeking greener home heating alternatives, leading heating

manufacturer Alpha has launched a new addition to its existing heat pump range. The Alpha Hydro is a single-phase solution which pairs with a pre-plumbed 200 litre cylinder and Smartech controls to provide the ultimate in renewable heating efficiency. Cleverly working to be as efficient as possible, the air source heat pump solution utilises low-temperature heat from the outdoor air and increases the heat within the system. This can then be transferred, for example, to water that circulates around radiators or even underfloor heating in the home. The most noticeable difference in using the Hydro heat pump compared to a boiler is that it is a low- temperature system best suited to continuous operation. This contrasts with the tried and tested gas boiler which switches on and off during the day to keep the house at a required level. A standout feature of the Hydro is its built-in weather compensation probe. This is designed to ensure precise monitoring of inside and outside temperatures. By ensuring timely changes in the heat delivered, the weather compensation will help to keep the desired levels of heat in the property constant without the homeowner noticing any fluctuations. This is one of the reasons heat pumps are so energy efficient.

Smartech Controls The Hydro is best managed using the Alpha Smartech controller, enabling smart app based remote control. These enable users to programme their heating systems to suit their lifestyle and desired comfort level from anywhere, thanks to a wireless thermostat which links to Wi-Fi via a mobile device. These are compatible with the Alpha Smartech app available on iOS and Android to help make remote heating adjustments even easier.

Daniel Wilden, renewable product manager for Alpha, comments: “The Alpha Hydro offers those who are ready to embrace energy efficient technology the perfect solution to do so. With the Hydro heat pump able to operate at a lower temperature for longer, homeowners need no longer worry about turning their heating on and off to keep their homes at a desired level. The brains of the system will work to be as efficient as possible, always keeping the home at an ideal and even temperature. It is vital for installers to understand the requirements of this system as they will be obliged to ensure that it is set up correctly for optimum performance. Our training is available to assist installers in doing this.”

Specialist Training for Installers Offering dedicated training to installers, Alpha is proud to support installers with the transition to renewable heating systems. Now available at various locations nationwide, Alpha’s in-house specialists provide practical advice on system designs, key features and considerations when fitting a heat pump; together with expert, hands-on training in product positioning and installation. Alpha encourages installers to attend its free training centres in order to improve product knowledge

and skills and stay up to date with the latest innovations and gain practical hands-on experience. Those who take up the training also have the opportunity to discuss the latest energy saving products and relevant legislation.

ress fittings have made life a bit easier for many installers, be it for drinking water, heating or gas. Piping system specialist SANHA takes this one step further with combipress. Their metallic fittings are designed in such a way that they can be pressed with different jaws and slings with original V

and M contours in addition to SANHA’s own contour. This function is called “combipress” by the manufacturer. It summarises three important advantages

of using SANHA, all designed to make installations simpler: Apart from Push & Stay and the Leak Path function for added safety, all metallic fittings up to and including 54 mm can be pressed with SA, V or M jaws (for their MLCP pipes and fittings, TH, B, F, H and U can be used). Larger dimensions which are not used as often can still be pressed with the SANHA and M profile. The benefit here is obvious – installers can use their existing tools and be safe in the knowledge that

the connection will do what it is expected to do. This applies to all metallic press fit series, such as the SANHA-Press Gas series. Here the manufacturer offers dimensions 12 – 54 mm which can be used with all copper pipes according to EN 1057.
