Simplified wire terminations for boiler installations

Mike Cullom, sales manager UK & Ireland of IDEAL Industries EMEA, discusses the benefits of the Gen II Lever wire connectors for faster, easier and safer electrical wire terminations when installing gas boilers

S

ince IDEAL Industries first began pioneering push in connectors in the UK almost 20 years ago, followed by SpliceLine and Lever Connectors, they have become popular with electricians and a seen as a game changer for the electrical contracting sector.

But it’s not only electrical fit-out projects that have benefitted from the speed and ease of installation the connectors bring to wire terminations. The connectors are also widely used as an alternative to terminal blocks for the electrical terminations required for gas boiler installations, making them a hero product for heating engineers too. They are said to be suitable for all kinds of installations, from domestic properties to complex commercial projects.

The success of the connectors has led to further R&D investment to build on this patented innovation with the development of the next generation of lever wire connectors: Gen II. With even more features and functionality, the Gen II range is poised to make boiler installations faster, easier, safer and more consistent than ever.

Innovation in wire termination

Suitable for a quick, simple and safe wire termination installation with a high level of power consumption up to 32amp, the Gen II lever wire connector range provides a versatile solution suitable for joining solid, stranded or flexible conductors. Two-, three- or five-port models are available, enabling easy selection of the correct connector or combination of connectors for each termination. Offering an attractive alternative to terminal blocks, the wire connector range allows cables to be secured in place in seconds, with no screwdriver or crimping required and a simple strip, push, connect action. The levers have been designed to open in the opposite direction to the insertion port, locking the cables into position to prevent any accidental loosening or pull-out, ensuring a safe and secure connection throughout the lifecycle of the installation. The clear housing for all the Gen II lever wire connector models enables easy inspection to enable verification that the termination has been achieved successfully, and there is a check port for testing, enabling full safety and consistency verification at the point of installation.

Versatility built-in

Designed to provide a versatile and cost- effective solution for faster, easier wire terminations, the range is re-useable and allows

the use of multiple wires of different sizes and types within the same lever connector. All models can be used with solid or rigid stranded cables of between 0.2mm2 and 4.0mm2, while the units are suitable for use with any flexible cable from 0.14mm2 to 4.00mm2. Each connector features a built-in wire strip guide for easy checking of the correct stripping length and, for solid and stranded cables, once the wire has been stripped, it can simply be pushed in with no need to lift the lever. For flexible wires, the lever is lifted before inserting the conductor and clamping it into place. The connectors have been designed to prevent errors and ensure consistency, enabling wire terminations to be carried out more quickly with less risk of snagging.

Safety and versatility

The versatility of the Gen II lever wire connector range allows any application up to 32amp, including radial and final ring circuits. They are compatible with different wire types and sizes, making the range suitable for a wide variety of heating and plumbing applications, in both domestic and commercial fit-out or refurbishment. The compact design enables easier fitting for projects where there is restricted space, which can be particularly beneficial in retrofit scenarios where there may be a requirement to fit a new, larger boiler in an existing location. Making wire terminations faster and simpler not only helps to reduce labour costs and time on site, it also an important role to play in safety, and the ease of installation offered delivers safety and consistency. Testing and certification are also integral to safety assurance for any building services installation, and that’s just as true of a small accessory such as the Gen II wire termination connector as it is for the boiler itself. The range is CE marked, UKCA and UL listed and is also ENEC accredited and fully compliant with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

Convenient and cost effective

Listening to the marketplace not only means understanding what different types of users need from the range of wire termination connectors and developing the right products at the right price; it also means providing the right pack sizes. Far fewer wire connectors are required for a heating and plumbing installation than for a full electrical fit-out, so they are available in a variety of pack sizes, enabling installers to try the range for the first time or buy in bigger quantities for larger installations.

Pack sizes include boxes, bags and kits, such as the new Twin & Earth Kit, which includes a stripper, cutter and 20 each of the 32A-rated two- and three-port Push In and Gen II lever wire connectors. Also available are a 20-piece bag of assorted 32A connectors, which includes the popular SpliceLine and three-port Push In, as well as the new two- and three-port Gen II lever wire connectors.

Gen II Innovation for all generations

Building services technologies are changing and the traditional terminal block method for achieving wire terminations during heating and plumbing installations has become outmoded. The Gen II range brings fresh ideas to site that combine safety and ease of use with all the quality and cost.
