INDUSTRY FOCUS OIL & GAS

SIL certified IQ3 valve actuators N

Rotork orders for new refinery include SIL certified IQ3 valve actuators for critical safety systems

ow under construction, Iraq’s State Company of Oil Projects’ (SCOP)

Karbala Refinery will use state-of-the- art refining processes and automated control to maximise production of liquefied gas, petrol, gas oil, fuel oil, jet fuel and asphalt. When it opens in 2020, the facility will have a refining capacity of 140,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Production will meet the latest international standards, serving the growing domestic demand for oil in Iraq and reducing the current level of refined product imports. Rotork orders for the Karbala

Refinery include large quantities of IQ3 non-intrusive intelligent electric valve actuators, designed specifically for automated flow control systems in hazardous environments. With their diagnostic and asset management abilities, the IQ3 actuators will facilitate the reliable, efficient and safe operation of the refinery. Comprehensive operational data including valve torque profiles stored in actuator dataloggers can be downloaded and analysed to

enable predictive maintenance and optimise plant performance. For critical areas, actuator duties will

include the provision of a Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2) Emergency Shutdown (ESD)

function. Recognised

around the world, the SIL system identifies the requirements for a Safety Instrumented

System (SIS). In the flow control industry, Rotork is

at the forefront of this technology, with IQ3 actuators

certified for use in a SIS up to SIL level 2 for a single actuator or SIL level 3 for two actuators in a redundant system. These actuators are equipped with the

Rotork SIL safety module, which monitors the standard IQ3 control board and provides diagnostic coverage and redundant control in order to perform the desired safety function. A safety function status relay provides remote indication of the actuator availability and the redundant safety function operation, with the same status duplicated locally on the actuator display.

Rotork www.rotork.com LARGE DIAMETER PIPELINE INSPECTION

Riftek recently completed the supply of custom designed 2D measurement scanners that included a high resolution video camera and LED lighting. Developed for a large US-based

company that specialises in technology-enabled solutions for challenging energy related inspection and maintenance tasks, the RF525EP scanner is an important component for a robotic crawler that is used for the down-hole detection of damage and defects as well as ovality measurement of gas and oil pipelines. As part of the design specification, the customer required the IP67 rated assembly to be certified explosion- proof. By combining the laser measurement components with the camera system in a sealed explosion- proof housing, Riftek could not only save its customer design effort but also reduced overall costs and made a faster production schedule possible for the robotic crawler.

The scanner and camera system is based on RIFTEK’s RF625 series 2D laser triangulation sensor and has a measurement range of 400mm in Z and 80mm to 300mm in X. Through the RF625 series, sampling rate and accuracy extends to up to 1,975 profiles per second with linearity to +/- 0.1 per cent of range (Z-axis). The sensor is available with red or blue lasers and a wide choice of interfacing includes Ethernet IPv4, 4...20mA or 0...10V DC. The laser and scanner input electronics is sealed in a robust and durable aluminium and glass housing which has a very high shock and vibration rating with built-in heating for a temperature range that extends from -20° to +70°C. GAS DETECTOR FOR SAFE INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS

Honeywell has launched a connected gas detector designed to keep industrial operations safe while making set- up, maintenance and compliance reporting faster and easier by leveraging Bluetooth connectivity. The Sensepoint XRL fixed gas detector monitors industrial

operations for specific hazardous gases, such as carbon monoxide or methane. Unlike many other fixed gas detectors, Sensepoint XRL is Bluetooth-enabled, meaning it can be set up and maintained remotely using a smartphone app. “Setting up, maintaining and generating reports from a

fixed gas detector has usually been a time-consuming effort involving ladders or lifts, multiple personnel and even temporary equipment or production shutdowns,” said Duncan Gooch, product manager, gas detection, for Honeywell Industrial Safety. “With new Bluetooth connectivity, a single worker can quickly carry out a range of tasks – from set-up and maintenance to reporting – in hazardous areas from the safety of ground level.” When paired with an intrinsically safe smartphone

available from Honeywell, a single worker can perform many standard maintenance tasks, including set-up, commissioning, and calibration wirelessly from up to 10 metres away. Sensepoint XRL and the app also can quickly produce system reports necessary for safety and environmental regulatory compliance. Sensepoint XRL is certified for explosive area applications,

and is suitable for downstream oil and gas operations. The detector monitors for hazardous levels of one targeted gas from among a selectable range of 23 toxic and combustible gases, including methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide. It is IP 66-rated and uses a metal enclosure to stand up to rugged use, including hosedowns.

Honeywell www.honeywellsafety.com LASER LEVEL TRANSMITTER

ABB’s LLT100 laser level transmitter is specifically designed for industrial applications and harsh environments. The device enables precise measurement

of any solid or liquid surface from -40° to +60°C, or up to 280°C with a cooling tube. With its IP67/NEMA 4X explosion proof class 1 / division 1 (zone 1) enclosure, it can be used

in a range of applications, including in the oil and gas sector. Offering a resolution of 5mm, an accuracy of ±20mm and an eye-safe, Class 1 laser beam with a divergence of less than 0.35°, the LLT100 can be used in low visibility conditions. Its range spans from 0.5 to 30m for liquids, 0.5 to 100m for solids and 0.5m to 200m for positioning applications with a reflective target. A rotating bracket and a swivel flange option allows precision

aiming of the beam, while a laser pointer tool is used to provide a visual reference when aligning the LLT100. With no maintenance or calibration needed, the LLT100 offers

a low cost of ownership. ABB
