sensors supplement FEATURES 28
To gain insights into the complex physics inside cargo containment systems (CCS) partially filled with liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Dutch research institute MARIN has developed a new facility named The Atmosphere. One hundred pressure sensors from Kistler inside the ATM deliver accurate feedback on sloshing wave impacts – a major contribution to improving CCS designs not only for LNG but also, potentially, for hydrogen in the near future.
The sea ice around the Hudson Bay region of Canada is melting earlier and freezing later, resulting in hungry polar bears spending a month longer on land without food. HENSOLDT is contributing its sensors to a pilot project in Canada dedicated to the protection of the threatened species.
Wind turbines contributed 24 per cent of the UK’s energy in 2020, with 13 per cent of the UK’s energy use being supplied from turbines sited offshore. This success relies upon the performance and reliability of the wind turbines being able to operate in remote and highly demanding environments.
In the manufacturing of machined parts, vibration is a familiar challenge. Excessive machine vibration – or chatter – and the unwanted shaking of machines leads to increased wear on tools and machines, ultimately resulting in the production of sub-par components which might not adhere to exacting specifications.
In recent years, the increased utilisation of low-cost sensors has significantly affected the safety, industrial process and environmental markets, but instead of replacing reference-grade analysers, low-cost sensors have dramatically expanded the scope and range of applications for gas and particle monitoring equipment; particularly for environmental applications. As a consequence, the number of sensor manufacturers has increased considerably. Arthur Burnley from Alphasense outlines some of the factors that should be considered when choosing a sensor supply partner.
ESI Tecnology has announced its latest in product development, the GS4400. This GENSPEC pressure transmitter is designed to meet the operational requirements of demanding pressure measurement applications where good quality, fast delivery and low cost are of the highest priority.
