HIGH RESOLUTION RADIATION TOLERANT LENSES

R

esolve Optics is now supplying HD (1080p) resolution radiation tolerant lenses optimised for the new generation of radiation hard CMOS cameras designed for monitoring nuclear reprocessing and power generation plants. The desire from nuclear plants for clearer and brighter images to enable them to better monitor their facilities and processes has accelerated the move from expensive, lower resolution tube cameras to higher resolution CMOS

based cameras. Drawing upon over 2 decades of serving the nuclear industry - Resolve Optics is now able to also offer radiation tolerant lenses that can produce clear, sharp images free of the strong yellow tint that traditionally has been a limiting issue particularly when used on colour sensors.

12.1” EMBEDDED SMART TFT LCD FOR HARSH ENVIRONMENTS

N

ew from our partner DWIN Technology comes their 12.1” Embedded Smart TFT LCD (DMG10768S121_03WTC) including a Capacitive Touch with tempered glass cover lens and UV and AG coatings. Designed for severe environment applications its -40°C ~ +85°C operating temperature range and conformal coating makes it the ideal display solution for a host of HMI applications where

extremes of temperature are regularly experienced. The 1024(RGB)x768 resolution IPS TFT LCD delivers a good optical performance with ultra-wide viewing angles of 85°/85°/85°/85°, a 350nit brightness and a 16.7M colour palette. It has outline dimensions of 288.9(H) x 204.0(V) x 23.9(D)mm plus an active area of 246.0(H) x 184.5(V)mm, weighs 1250g and has an operating voltage range of 12~36VDC. At the heart of the module is DWIN’s own powerful T5L2 dual-core 8051 processor with inbuilt 1MB of NOR Flash, with communication to peripheral devices made via 2 x RS232 (UART2 & UART4) and 1 x RS485 (UART5). The module also includes 32MB NOR Flash which can be expanded to either 64MB or 48MB NOR Flash and 512MB NAND Flash.

By using DWIN’s Smart Display’s and their DGUS II software development tool users can quickly and simply create a complex graphical user interface (GUI) including images, sounds, fonts and touch functionality on their laptop. Once completed the finished GUI can be saved to an SD Card (64MB max) which can then be transferred to the Smart Display and saved to the module’s Flash memory.

3.5”(320x240), 4.3”(480x272) and 10.4”(1024x768) sizes are also available in this range.

3-D PRINTING EXPEDITES TITAN ENTERPRISES’ R&D IN FLOW METER TECHNOLOGY

3D printing technology is fundamentally changing the way we design, prototype and test flowmeter devices within our R&D, particularly when developing specialist designs for OEM applications,” says Neil Hannay, Senior

R&D Engineer with Titan Enterprises. Titan’s research, development and design advancements are focused around finding innovative solutions for OEM customers, pushing the boundaries of both the physical properties and performance of the products. Titan started incorporating 3-D printing technology for design over 5 years ago, at the time using a state-of-the-art FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer. New advances in 3D printing have seen this printer become redundant against Titan’s R&D investment in a new printer, purchased at a fraction of the cost yet capable of so much more! With improved technology and an increased range of engineering materials available, this 3-D printing technique is taking a greater role in Titan’s research and development activities, allowing for quick and cost-effective prototyping. Although more expensive per cubic volume of model, the precision, detail and durability of Titan’s new UV resin printer allows greater fidelity and facilitates highly iterative design. The other advantage of the resin printer is that it enables printing of replacement parts and own tools to use. “Being able to make small, precise changes to designs along the development route to test functionality and performance enables us to fast-track through the design process,” states Neil. “This gives our R&D design engineers more freedom to experiment with novel designs at a lower cost, both in time and money, and rapid prototyping. Models and components can be tested, pushing the boundaries of concept design, durability and size in a short amount of time. As such, a tested and performing prototype that we have a good level of confidence in, can then go out to our injection moulding suppliers to produce a customer prototype.” For example, for a recent OEM turbine development, the 3D printer enabled Titan to size and fit the flowmeter’s externals to the customer’s equipment and run preliminary integrated performance tests.
